Scott Joplin's Original Rags is amazingly suitable for wind quintet (flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, F horn and bassoon). Originally for piano, the lively melody and bass parts have been shared by the five woodwind instruments in a way that brings out the animated character of the winds. I have taken liberties to add some interpretation when I arranged the original piano score for wind quintet in a way that further eccentuates the lively character of Original Rags.

This fun ragtime arrangement of Daisy Rag Two-Step by Fred Heltman, 1909, opens with clarinet and flute on melody, followed by a switch to a minor key during which the oboe takes the melody. The bassoon and French horn carry the bassline, with each instrument sharing the upbeats and downbeats. A trio section features the clarinet, flute, and horn. This part is reminiscent of carnival or carousel music. Run time is approximately 2:45.

George Botsford wrote Hyacinth Rag in 1911. This woodwind quintet arrangement opens with oboe in a minor key followed by the melody, requiring some fast keywork on the part of the oboist. A pretty flute accompaniment adds an airy feel to the oboe line. In the second section the flute performs a series of runs, and is answered by the clarinet and horn. A trio section pairs flute with horn and clarinet with bassoon. The piece concludes with a return to the second section. Run time is approximately 2:30.
