Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Horn,Oboe - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1466171

Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Darrell Goforth. Baroque. 32 pages. Darrell Harrison Goforth #1044794. Published by Darrell Harrison Goforth (A0.1466171).

J. S. Bach's work, The Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 are here arranged for Woodwind Quintet.

Originally written for Johann Gottlieg Goldberg, the Goldberg Variations were originally published in 1741 and may have been initially performed publically by Herr Gottlieb.

This work consists of an Aria and 30 variations.  I have included in this effort the Aria and Variations 1 through 5.  I will publish therest of the variations at a later date.  I think it sounds rather interesting for this ensemble and I hope you enjoy playing it.

The cover portrait, as you may have noticed, is not of either Bach or Goldberg.  It is, rather, of a little known younger brother of Johann Sebastian named Robert Feliux Bach.  Bob was neither a composer or musician, but was known as a champion mouser in Hamburg.

As always, comments an suggestions are always welcome at darrell.goforth2@gmail,com.

SKU: A0.1248051

Composed by Sir Arthur Seymour Sullivan. Arranged by Ted R. Marcus. 19th Century,Chamber,Romantic Period,Wedding. 31 pages. Ted R. Marcus #842615. Published by Ted R. Marcus (A0.1248051).

Day Dreams is a collection of six solo piano miniatures the young Arthur Sullivan published in 1867. The pieces amply demonstrate a natural melodic gift that would reach full fruition in the enduring comic operas Sullivan wrote with W.S. Gilbert.

This is a contrasting pair of Daydreams, numbers 2 and 6, arranged for woodwind quintet. The first Daydream, Robert and Clara, is an expressive cantabile aria that evokes the music of Robert Schumann. The oboe, clarinet, and horn sing the complete melody, but everyone gets at least a fragment of it. (This selection is great for weddings and church services as well as for the concert hall.) The second, À l'Hongroise, is the flashy finale of the Day Dreams collection. It's a spirited Hungarian-inspired dance with a chromatic melody in shifting tonality, with harmonic turns audacious enough to thrill even 21st century listeners, culminating in a wide-ranging arpeggio passage for the four woodwinds. Both selections are transposed up half a step from the original keys of D major and f-sharp minor.

Arranged for advanced players, the two selections make a great concert opener, closer, or encore.

Duration: 6:12

Composed by Gabriel Faure. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century,Wedding. 11 pages. RayThompsonMusic #4405172. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553784).

The Dolly Suite, Op. 56, is a collection of pieces for piano four-hands by Gabriel Fauré. It consists of short pieces written or revised between 1893 and 1896, to mark the birthdays and other events in the life of the daughter of the composer's mistress.

An orchestral version of the suite was scored in 1906 by Henri Rabaud, and has, like the original piano duet version, received several recordings. The best-known section of the suite, the Berceuse, has been arranged for several combinations of instruments. In Britain it became famous as the play-out tune to Listen with Mother.

The suite, consisting of six short pieces, each with its own title: Berceuse, Mi-a-ou, Le jardin de Dolly, Kitty-valse, Tendresse and Le pas espagnol. The complete suite takes about fifteen minutes to perform.

Mi-a-ou

Allegro vivo. Mi-a-ou was written for Dolly's second birthday in June 1894. The title does not refer to a pet cat, as has often been supposed, but to Dolly's attempts to pronounce the name of her elder brother Raoul, who later became one of Fauré's favourite pupils. The young Dolly called her brother Messieu Aoul, which Fauré took as the original title for the piece. In his finished manuscript the title is shortened to Miaou (without hyphens). The Fauré scholar Robert Orledge writes that the title Mi-a-ou, like that of the Kitty-valse later in the suite, is the responsibility of Fauré's publisher, Julien Hamelle.[
