This entertaining and playful cakewalk, forerunner of ragtime style, is by the prominent Canadian-American Black composer Nathaniel Dett who studied with notable teachers as composer Arthur Foote at Harvard, was the first African-American to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Music from Oberlin Conservatory in composition and piano in 1908 and received an Honorary Masters Degree in 1932 from the Eastman School of Music. Arranged for a traditional woodwind quintet of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon, with alternate parts clarinet in B-flat substitute for oboe, alto saxophone in E-flat substitute for horn, and bass clarinet in B-flat substitute for bassoon, the arrangement has wide audience appeal and is very accessible for less experienced players. Music in the Mine provides a musical interpretation of the back-breaking and mind-numbing mining work in the steady accompaniment along with the dialogue of two miners yearning for better days, while Let Us Cheer the Weary Travelers is an upbeat dedication to our spiritual journey.   As Director of the Hampton Institute, Dett developed the college's choir with his compositions and conducting into one of the leading choirs in the nation.
