It was adapted from his Octet in E-flat major, Op. 103, which, despite its high opus number, was in fact composed by Beethoven in 1792/1793 but was published only in 1837, ten years after the composer's death. The Quintet was published in Vienna in 1796.The quintet has been viewed as a mere transcription of the octet. However, there are a few differences between the two works. In the first movement, there are significant changes in the exposition and substantial ones in the development, reprise, and ending. The ensuing Andante employs new themes and involves significant changes in the ones retained. The Scherzo and finale are also substantially different: among other alterations, a second trio was added to the former and a new alternate theme was inserted in the latter.This arrangement is for wind quintet. (Horn in Eb) but horn in F also provided.

Capriccio may be thought of whimsically, as a fantasy, while Ballata can be treated as a dance. Additionally these two ideas may constantly interact as each movement contains traces of the other. As this music is not programmatic in nature, no specific imagery must necessarily be sought after, but rather the material can be woven as the performers see fit within the tempo and dynamic guidelines. Sensitivity should be paid to the note-value relationships present within many tempo changes, as well as hemioli and other perceived metric shifts. Finally, performers are encouraged to explore the full range of textural colors present as this will accentuate the development of these ideas.

This entertaining piece was written in 1846 by Lumbye who became known as the Strauss of the North as his music was similar to Johann Strauss's and popular at the time. This piece lasts about 5 1/2 minutes and has many tempo changes....the reason for an advanced level rating. In fact, it may be useful for your group to play it with a conductor!  The music is really dream-like with its many changes of mood, much like how dreams often move from one scene to another without warning. It is set for flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, F horn, and bassoon.

The Chaconne was composed for organ but not published during Johann Pachelbel’s lifetime. First Publication was in 1901 by Breitkopf und Härtel. The four bar/measure theme is repeated as are all 25 variations. In almost every instance the repeat would have been more elaborate or played in a different register on the organ.In arranging the Chaconne for wind players I have used the different characteristics of the wind instruments in varying combinations and changes of register to create what I hope is an enjoyable and entertaining concert piece for players of advanced intermediate standard. The three part writing has been expanded to the five instruments of the standard woodwind quintet to give a wider scope for variation of scoring which also enables the players some breathing space.The dynamic markings are editorial so do feel free to use your own.

They were also arranged later by Hugo Riemann, and were again wrongly attributed to Giovanni Pergolesi.However Most of the original music is by Domenico Gallo (including the Finale of the suite), one or two are by Giovanni Pergolesi (including the Menuetto)The Pulcinella Suite for small chamber orchestra and 3 vocalists which was derived from the ballet, was written in 1922 and has no vocal parts. This is the original music he used as the basis of the Minuetto/Finale.But even though Stravinsky used Gallo's and Pergolesi's melodies and bass lines with little change in the earler movements of the Suite he managed to put his own unmistakable stamp on the music through his use of modern harmonies and occasional rhythmic modifications.
