Arranged wind quintet Clarinet In A and Horn in D (Alt Clt in Bb and Horn in F included) The Slavonic Dances (Czech: Slovanské tance) are a series of 16 orchestral pieces composed by Antonín Dvořák in 1878 and 1886 and published in two sets as Opus 46 and Opus 72 respectively. Originally written for piano four hands, the Slavonic Danceswere inspired by Johannes Brahms's own Hungarian Dances and were orchestrated at the request of Dvořák's publisher soon after composition. The pieces, lively and full of national character, were well received at the time and today are among the composer's most memorable works, occasionally making appearances in popular culture. This is my arrangement of no.6 (In some versions listed as no.3) :a gentle Allegretto scherzando: it suits the wind quintet I have attempted to give the players somewhere to breath, so they are not always tutti.

Published by Piper Publications (A0.811728). 5 Minuets arranged for flute, oboe, clarinet in Bb, horn in F & bassoon. Numbers 1, 3 & 5 each have two trios, numbers 2 & 4 do not have trios. The originals for string quartet were composed on November 19th 1813 - exactly fifteen years before Schubert's death at the age of 31. They remained unpublished until 1886, though they were probably performed at social gatherings of Schubert and his friends along with the 5 German Dances with 7 trios and Coda composed around the same time. The variety of style and content shows Schubert experimenting and pushing the boundaries of the minuet beyond Classical into the Romantic era. Players of intermediate standard and above will enjoy exploring these exuberant pieces.

Manuel De Falla’s two suites of dances from the ballet “The Three-Cornered Hat� (El sombrero de tres picos) contain the most quintessentially Spanish of all orchestral dances ever written, demanding a large orchestra (and singer.) Philip Le Bas has here arranged a short “mini-suite� of four movements for wind sextet: flute, oboe/cor anglais. clarinet, bass clarinet, french horn, and bassoon. All the major characters of the ballet are represented in the movements chosen, including the pompous, disreputable, and rather tipsy town mayor (played by the bassoon briefly in the third movement), the neighbours (who ultimately see justice done, tossing the mayor up and down on a blanket), and of course the dashing Miller and his electrifying wife! 1. This is a simple, straightforward arrangement for Wind Quintet, in a fairly easy key, that can be happily tackled by players with about a year's tuition behind them.When not composing all the mighty works for which he is known, Ludwig van Beethoven (1770 – 1827) also produced some great little potboilers for 'Harmonie', the German word denoting a small wind ensemble. 'Harmoniemusik' was usually played outdoors, and the music ranged from small forms, such as marches, polonaises, ecossaises and other dances, to multi-movement works such as the Serenades of Mozart and the great Octet in Eb major Op. 103 by Beethoven himself. This particular march was originally scored for the then traditional line-up of two clarinets, two bassoons and two horns.
