This unstable, suspenseful work details the the prophesied disastrous signs that will precede Christ's Second Coming through the use of asymetrical time signatures, whereas Christ's depicted descent from the heavens is the only part of the piece in 4/4, arguably the most comforting time signature. In fact, the title, Signs of the Times, is actually a play on words of the term time signatures, which is the main gimmick of the piece. Published by Phil Thrift (A0.955719). H.P. Takes Five is a cheeky take on Henry Purcell’s famous trumpet tune. Instead of 4/4 time, it’s in 5/4, with a few 7/4 measures thrown in for a bit more fun! Purcell (1659–95) wrote much incidental music for plays and so-called semi-operas performed in London’s theaters, and often included a trumpet tune as a signal for the next act. A trumpet was the only instrument that could be heard above the noise of the audience! This is the wind quintet adaptation of the arrangement originally written for brass quintet. The lead moves around the parts and so this is indicated to make sure that the appropriate line remains prominent. Pay attention to all the tenuto and staccato marks. Make sure that the ff in measures 26, 42, 52, and at the end are as loud as you can get them without overblowing. The fluid lines of the lyrical middle section will test your powers of concentration.

It took me twice as long to finish this piece as any other piece before it, and I really beat myself up about it. However, this piece taught me that music takes time and that is okay. I have a bittersweet relationship with this piece, as I hated figuring out how to write it, but completely love what the finished product has become. I greatly appreciate the work of Amanda Welch, Madison Church, Kendra Sachs, Trenton Carr, Aaron Lukenbill, and Cheyenne Cruz, as the performers and director for this piece.

Also known as Poor Wayfaring Stranger and I Am A Poor Wayfaring Stranger, this song probably originated in the early 19th century.  It has been recorded numerous times, but most significantly appears in the 2019 film 1917 where a soldier sings this plaintive melody to his fellow comrades just before going into battle. This arrangement is divided into two sections.  Section one is a very haunting scenario, very plain with insistent harmonic devices. The second section is a more elaborate version with more harmonic movement and tempo extensions to create more drama.  It ends as plaintively as it begins.

Satie wrote a set of three Gnossiennes for the piano right at the end of the 19th Century. Always one to challenge convention, he invented the word 'Gnossienne' especially for theses pieces - it has no other meaning. He also decided to notate the pieces without key signatures, time signatures or even bar lines and I have decided to do the same here in this arrangement.The piece gradually unfolds in a kind of trance-like hypnotic ambiance; this arrangement features the melody in all parts, starting unusually in the bass.
