Joseph Pugh #743698. Published by Joseph Pugh (A0.1143336). The December solstice, also known as the southern solstice, is the solstice that occurs each December – typically on 21 December, but may vary by one day in either direction according to the Gregorian calendar. In the Northern Hemisphere, the December solstice is the winter solstice (the day with the shortest period of daylight), whilst in the Southern Hemisphere it is the summer solstice (the day with the longest period of daylight). The solstice also marks the changing of seasons in many countries. 21 December is the first day of winter (in the Northern Hemisphere) and the first day of summer (in the Southern Hemisphere). This arrangement, by Joseph Pugh commemorates the event with the Woodwind Quintet.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.553690 Composed by Frederick Delius. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century,Concert,Holiday,Wedding. 21 pages. RayThompsonMusic #3506929. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553690). On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring is a tone poem composed in 1912 by Frederick Delius; it was first performed in Leipzig on 23 October 1913. It is the first of Two Pieces for Small Orchestra, the second piece being Summer Night on the River, although these have for many years existed separately on recordings and in the concert hall. The piece opens with a slow three-bar sequence; its first theme is an exchange of cuckoo calls. The second theme is  taken from a Norwegian folk song, In Ola Valley, which was brought to his attention by the Australian composer and folk-song arranger Percy Grainger. (The theme was also arranged by Edvard Grieg in his 19 Norwegian Folksongs, Op. 66.)The clarinet returns with the cuckoo calls before the piece ends in pastoral fashion.Arranged symphonic wind and contra bass/tuba.

Small Ensemble Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Horn,Oboe - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1031729 Composed by K.L. King. Arranged by James Cutter. Folk,Holiday,Instructional,Patriotic,Standards,Traditional. Score and parts. 11 pages. James Cutter #3536147. Published by James Cutter (A0.1031729). Karl King's best-known composition is his Barnum and Bailey's Favorite. In that march, he is able to conjure up a magnificent scene of the old circus tents -- all the aromas, all the sounds, all the sights, and, of course, the circus band. King in 'A Night in June' he transports you to a simpler time. With images of sitting on the porch at evening listening to the crickets sipping on ice tea and just enjoying life. This arrangement is for Woodwind Quintet; where the French Horn has the melody for the majority of the time. Usually in woodwind quintet settings French Horn plays a support role with the Flute or oboe playing the melody. In this arrangement the horn gets to shine. This is a great teaching piece for an advancing Woodwind Quintet. It does have some tricky key signatures for all of the parts but would make a great supplement to a summer music camp or music program looking to challenge a young ensemble.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet Bassoon,Clarinet,Flute,Horn,Oboe - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.553348 Composed by Edward MacDowell. Arranged by Ray Thompson. 20th Century,Contemporary,Holiday,Standards,Wedding. 10 pages. RayThompsonMusic #2081651. Published by RayThompsonMusic (A0.553348). Edward Alexander MacDowell (December 18, 1860 – January 23, 1908) was an American composer and pianist of the late Romantic period. It was written during an 1896 stay at MacDowell's summer retreat in Peterborough, New Hampshire, where each piece was inspired by a different aspect of the surrounding nature and landscapeThe suite's first piece, To a Wild Rose, is MacDowell's best known single work according to the musicologist H. Wiley Hitchcock, and it achieved what Bomberger described as phenomenal popularity. MacDowell believed the work's popularity arose because the publisher spread its score generously across two pages. The piece begins with a spare melody, based on a simple one from the Brotherton Indians. The melody is played in short fragments and accompanied by chords and pedal points. The climax consists of a repeated dominant ninth chord, which can also be heard as a version of the Tristan chord. The piece concludes with a Scotch snap rhythm. Crawford opined that the piece's harmony saves it from blandness.Arranged for wind quintet…It could have been written for wind quintet!Other pieces are available.
