Johnson’s Broadway 1923 show “Runnin’ Wild� to become the wildly popular and unofficial anthem of the Roaring 20’s.  An important jazz pianist and composer, Johnson was a major influence on Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, and Fats Waller.  Arranged for a traditional woodwind quintet of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon, with alternate parts clarinet in B-flat substitute for oboe, alto saxophone in E-flat substitute for horn, and bass clarinet in B-flat substitute for bassoon the arrangement retains the style of the day that has enticed audiences for decades. The recording is of the entire edition.

“Royal Garden Blues” was written by Clarence and Spencer Williams in 1919, and first became a hit in 1921 when it was recorded by The Original Dixieland Jazz Band. It is considered the first popular song to be based on a riff (a repetitive short rhythmic phrase) and is now a jazz standard.

This timeless blues song has since been performed by bands led by Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Al Hirt; blues artists Mamie Smith, Ethel Waters, and Ella Fitzgerald; legendary performers Bix Beiderbecke, Sidney Bechet, Pete Fountain, Django Reinhardt, Art Tatum; and more recently by Chet Atkins, Herb Ellis, Branford Marsalis, and the Canadian Brass. 

This woodwind quintet arrangement is based on the upbeat recording by pianist Cliff Jackson, giving it an unmistakable 1940s stride feel with relentless rhythm and colorful harmonies. Anatoly Lyadov's Polonaise (Op. 55 - 1902) for the Unveiling of the Statue of Anton Rubenstein set for woodwind quintet by John Gibson. The Polonaise ( or Polacca) is an elegant dance of Poland that was characterized by a promenade style. In performance, the 1st and 3rd beats are emphasized a bit to match the dance steps. This setting for wind quintet includes flute, oboe, A Clarinet (or alternate Bb clarinet), F Horn, and Bassoon.

William Warden Harvey was an American composer and music educator born on November 20, 1861, in Auburn, New York. He began studying music at a young age and went on to receive a Bachelor of Music degree from Syracuse University in 1878. Later, he studied at the Leipzig Conservatory in Germany, where he received a degree in composition.

Harvey composed a variety of works, including chamber music, choral music, and operas, but it is his work as a music educator that is perhaps most significant. He served as the director of music at Syracuse University from 1893 to 1927, during which time he established the university's music department and worked to elevate the status of music education in the United States.

In addition to his work at Syracuse University, Harvey served as the president of the Music Teachers National Association and was a member of the National Association of Schools of Music. He was also a regular contributor to music journals and edited several collections of songs and hymns.

William Warden Harvey died on March 20, 1939, in Syracuse, New York, at the age of 77. His contributions to music education in the United States were significant, and his legacy lives on through the many students he taught and influenced during his long career.

Wilhelmus van Nassouwe, usually known just as Wilhelmus is the national anthem of both the Netherlands and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It dates back to at least 1572, making it the oldest national anthem in use today, provided that the latter is defined as consisting of both a melody and lyrics. Although Wilhelmus was not recognized as the official national anthem until 1932, it has always been popular with parts of the Dutch population and resurfaced on several occasions in the course of Dutch history before gaining its present status. The title Still Life, whilst being a term borrowed from painting, refers to the two temporal states of the piece, status and motion, which are juxtaposed and superimposed throughout. The static sections often lead into choral-like music, one of the references to Bach in the piece, which was commissioned by the Harper Ensemble for the 250 th anniversary of his death. The other principle reference comes in the trumpet’s opening figures which relate to material found in one of Bach’s harpsichord concertos. Joe Duddell.
