The 'Watchman's Song' is a lyrical, peaceful character piece, with an atmospheric middle section depicting the 'spirits of the night'. The original music has been transposed up a semitone, mainly to accommodate the clarinet, but also to make effective use of the lowest notes of the oboe and bassoon. The minor key looks tricky, but is actually perfectly practicable!).
