Born of an African father, Coleridge-Taylor was an early 20th century English composer and conductor who was an influential advocate for Black composers.  One of Coleridge-Taylor's rare A Cappella compositions, this is arranged for traditional woodwind quintet of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn and basson and includes substitute parts clarinet in B-flat for oboe, alto saxophone in E-flat for horn and bass clarinet in B-flat for bassoon. The middle section is the excitement and beauty of the ocean waves told through the music’s fun melodies. The end section combines the two sections into an adventurous theme, having the characteristic accompaniment of the first section and the fun, melodic nature of the second section.
