Individual parts can be used for rehearsal. In performance the combined score/part can be used - each wind quintet instrument plays as written, with the bassoon playing as if with a bass clef, the others as if with a treble clef. 

Eb and alto clef parts (based on the horn in F) are also available to enable inclusion, in a larger ensemble, of alto saxophone, tenor horn, viola. 

Programme Note 

I wanted to write a piece that took inspiration from one aspect of the political process. The starting point was a quote from William Burke (1729-97): All government, indeed every human benefit and enjoyment, every virtue, and every prudent act, is founded on compromise and barter.  [Speech on Conciliation with America, 1775] 

This quote did not in itself suggest to me all that was required, and so I tried to suggest the ideas of 'SpeakYour Mind' and 'Trust' in the other two sections. 

The music is presented as a combined score/part and I felt that in this context the idea of musicians playing within a single 'forum' would have an extra resonance. The music is presented on two sides of a single page, and I deliberately preceded the third section 'Trust' with the instruction 'turn over...'. In this way I hope to evoke the idea of 'turning over a new leaf'.

Dreams of the White Tiger is a work that had a complicated path to completion. Upon receiving this commission, I
contacted several of my friends (Jeff McCray, Matt Morris, and Richard Ramey) and requested lists of the most
highly regarded staples of the wind quintet repertoire. After studying these works, I selected one of my favorite
subjects from Norse mythology as inspiration. Unfortunately, this did not work out as the work wanted to be too
large and I could not reduce it down to a small chamber work.
At that point, I decided to switch gears and find a new source of inspiration, which I found in a poem by James Yates
titled White Tiger Trilogy. I sketched out three movements based on this poem and was, again, displeased with the
resulting work. However, I did very much like many elements from the sketches, so I decided to strip the piece down
to these elements and construct one single cohesive movement. I chose my favorite line from the original sketches
and made that the central theme in an extended sonata rondo movement. I was finally pleased with this product that
included elements from all of the different versions. Dreams of the White Tiger was commissioned by 111 wind quintets in consortium led by my friend Richard Ramey
and is dedicated to all of those who contributed to making this project a reality.

A young lady by the name of Katie was a devoted baseball fanatic. In fact almost every penny she had was spent on tickets to see her favorite team. Her boyfriend wanted to take her to see a show on a weekend afternoon but Katie declined instead insisting on going to the ballpark. This was not uncommon for her as she attended every home game sitting where she could call the players (usually by the first name) and let the umpires have it when an unfavorable ruling was made. In the heat of a game when the score was tied Katie would get other fans to cheer on the team by singing.

This is a brand new, original piece for wind quintet.

I decided that I wanted to create a musical description of summer under lockdown, spending time in the garden (although there are no bird sounds) in the NorthWest of England. The weather here is usually very changeable (it's why we talk about it so much) so, of course, I included a thunderstorm in the middle!

The piece opens with a gentle walk in the garden, (bassoon) the beautiful flowers swaying in the slight breeze (clarinet and horn). The oboe melody that enters in bar two expresses my thoughts of delight at the beautiful scene. The melody is passed around the ensemble, there's a duet with the flute and then the bassoon takes charge, with the horn taking over the walking bassline.

At letter C there's an abrupt change of scene as I notice the bees busily flitting from flower to flower, pollenating and collecting nectar. The instruments play flutter-tongue to imitate an annoyed buzz every now and again as bees from different hives chance upon the same flower, but all remains peacefully business-like.

At Letter D, we have a slight slowing of tempo as some butterflies flit from place to place, aimlessly taking off and landing fluttering for a short while in the sunshine. This section is as carefree as possible and should just amble along. The tempo can be pulled about quite a bit.

At Letter F, there's a huge, sudden thunderstorm, jagged lightning and rolling thunder as a downpour drenches the garden. Just as suddenly as it started, the storm ends and rain reduces to a thin drizzle. Out comes the sun and we continue through the garden into the distance.

This short piece was written for Prismatic Winds in 2024, to close a Scottish-themed concert, and I wanted a good finale which encompassed as many famous Scottish tunes as possible. The result was Scottish Fantasy, which is a mashup of 23 popular melodies, some more recognisable than others. The piece would be a fantastic addition to any woodwind quintet's repertoire.

Melodious & Peculiar Winds, originally named Melodious & Peculiar Reeds, is a Woodwind Quintet scored for Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, and Bassoon. The reason why I changed the title is because all of the instruments use reeds, whether they are single or double reeds, except the flute. It did not dawn on me that the title wasn't true until I published this piece the first time. Once I caught it, I had to go back and change just that one word on all the music and the mp3 file. I wanted to make sure everything was right!!!

This piece is part of a study I was conducting. Despite being a composer for about 6 years, I have only had a brief formal study of counterpoint. I wanted to enhance my composing technique, so I began studying counterpoint on my own, aiming for a more academic approach. This fugue represents the culmination of all my studies. I completed this piece in its entirety on 31/07/2023, and I am very proud of the results I have achieved. It is a highly lyrical piece for woodwind quintet, offering numerous possibilities for interpretations, and yet, it is easy to perform. It is well-suited for solo and ensemble performances, as well as other school activities involving music performance. I am delighted to be able to offer this piece at a reasonable price, and I sincerely hope you enjoy it as much as I did while writing it.

Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? is a song that was included on Chicago's 1969 debut album Chicago Transit Authority and released as a single in 1970. According to composer Robert Lamm, it was the first song recorded for the album. The song was not released as a single until two tracks from the band's second album, Make Me Smile and 25 or 6 to 4, had become hits. It reached No. 7 in the U.S. and No. 2 in Canada. Said Lamm: [It's] not a complicated song, but it’s certainly a quirky song. But that was my intent. I wanted to write something that wasn’t ordinary, that wasn’t blues-based, that didn’t have ice cream changes, and would allow the horns to shine and give Lee Loughnane a solo.

This arrangement is for saxophone quintet (soprano, alto, two tenors, and baritone) and the melody is passed around the ensemble a bit. The arrangement is suitable for intermediate level players.
