This dance features the horn.

Marin Marais (1656 – 1728) was a French composer and viol player at the royal court of Versailles. His most famous works are his five books of Pièces de Viole, from which these pieces are taken.

The Five Old French Dances were first presented as a single edition in the early twentieth century, arranged for viola and piano by Maud E Aldis and Louis T Rowe.

The pieces in the set are as follows and my arrangement of each piece features a different member of the quintet:

L'Agréable - oboe
La Provençale - flute 
La Musette - bassoon
La Matelotte - clarinet
Le Basque - horn

I have also arranged this piece for horn quartet and for horn and piano..

This is a shorter version of the original, and this vesrion was played many times as an encore piece by the late great hornist Dennis Brain who called it “a little French dance, which also happens to be the shortest piece I know.â€.

Two Elegiac Melodies, Op. 34, is a composition in two movements for string orchestra by Edvard Grieg, completed in 1880 and first published in 1881.

The two movements are instrumental arrangements Grieg made of two of his 12 Melodies, Op. 33, published in 1880: these were settings for voice and piano of words by the Norwegian poet and journalist Aasmund Olavsson Vinje.

The Two Elegiac Melodies were dedicated to Heinrich von Herzogenberg.

Grieg also made an arrangement for solo piano.

This arrangement is of No.2 - VÃ¥ren ( Last Spring).

. In Vinje's words, from Grieg's Op. 33 No. 2, the poet describes the beauty of the countryside in spring, appearing after the snow of winter; he thinks he might be seeing it for the last time.

It is arranged for standard wind quintet.

George Gershwin is best known for his orchestral pieces like Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris and the opera Porgy and Bess.  He was also an accomplished piano player and this piece is from a suite of 3 short piano pieces initially performed by Gershwin in 1926.  It has a jazz feel but is very subdued - Gershwin himself referred to this piece as a sort of blues lullaby.
