Day Dreams is a collection of six solo piano miniatures the young Arthur Sullivan published in 1867. The pieces amply demonstrate a natural melodic gift that would reach full fruition in the enduring comic operas Sullivan wrote with W.S. Gilbert. This is a contrasting pair of Daydreams, numbers 2 and 6, arranged for woodwind quintet. The first Daydream, Robert and Clara, is an expressive cantabile aria that evokes the music of Robert Schumann. The oboe, clarinet, and horn sing the complete melody, but everyone gets at least a fragment of it. (This selection is great for weddings and church services as well as for the concert hall.) The second, À l'Hongroise, is the flashy finale of the Day Dreams collection. It's a spirited Hungarian-inspired dance with a chromatic melody in shifting tonality, with harmonic turns audacious enough to thrill even 21st century listeners, culminating in a wide-ranging arpeggio passage for the four woodwinds. This entertaining piece was written in 1846 by Lumbye who became known as the Strauss of the North as his music was similar to Johann Strauss's and popular at the time. This piece lasts about 5 1/2 minutes and has many tempo changes....the reason for an advanced level rating. In fact, it may be useful for your group to play it with a conductor!  The music is really dream-like with its many changes of mood, much like how dreams often move from one scene to another without warning. The Carnival of the Animals (Le carnaval des animaux) is a humorous musical suite of fourteen movements by the French Romantic composer Camille Saint-Saëns. The work was written for private performance by an ad hoc ensemble of two pianos and other instruments, and lasts around 25 minutes.Originally scored Double bass and piano: this section is marked Allegro pomposo, the perfect caricature for an elephant. The piano plays a waltz-like triplet figure while the bass hums the melody beneath it. Like Tortues, this is also a musical joke-the thematic material is taken from the Scherzo from Mendelssohn's incidental music to A Midsummer Night's Dream and Berlioz's Dance of the Sylphs from The Damnation of Faust. However, this was an unhappymarriage, short-lived, with numerous conflicts and separations. Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair, was written asperhaps an attempt to win his wife back. To add to his problems, Foster also ran into deep financial difficulties.Jeanie With the Light Brown Hair was virtually unknown during its time. When it was first published, the royaltieson the ten thousand copies sold, earned just $200 for Stephen Foster. To make ends meet, he had to sell the rights toJeanie, as well as other songs. After his death, the rights to Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair reverted back to hiswife and daughter.It would indeed be a pleasant surprise to Stephen Foster, if he only knew what a wide range of artists have adaptedthis song to different genres.
