It's a battle for prominence between the secular motives and the religious theme. A constant sense of racing motion lies beneath the struggle. Which theme will be victorious? The melody is introduced one voice at a time over long sustained notes only joining together in a tutti at the first chorus. The texture and intensity expands in the second verse before revisitng the gently stated tutti of the chorus once again. The bridge is led by the horn and punctuated by the upper voices of the woodwinds before passing off to a brief solo flute passage setting up the final chorus. Not recommended for very beginners, however, it can be played by average students. It can be played in several ceremonies, academic recitals and concerts.The Fantasia that precedes the Fugue in C minor is a lamento pur sang. The rarefied notes floating high up seem to be lamenting some tragic loss or other. The sense of desolation is further reinforced by the dispirited, deep droning of the organ notes in the far distance. The lamento mood does not lessen on the introduction of the second theme, as now the notes start to descend breathlessly still further in pairs. Even after an extensive repetition of the two themes, we are still not done with the misery, as it closes with a question.

In modern times the Persian composer Mohammad Noori made an arrangement of these folk songs using a sythesizer and put words to the melody. This arrangement does not follow that arrangement. The first is a standard harmonization found in many hymnals. The second is based on the concluding Chorale of Cantata 80 by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). Including the music of both Bach and Pachelbel, this arrangement serves as an excellent introduction to the music of the Baroque era and the contributions of great Lutheran composers. Published by Lin Yizhi Ernest (A0.748745). Debussy's The Girl with the Flaxen Hair is an endearing piece and a great introduction to the musical world of Debussy. Every piano player would most probably be familiar with this piece, but not necessarily wind players. However, with this arrangement for Wind Quintet, the expressive voices of this piano piece are further explored by the colours of the Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn and Bassoon.The opening solo is deliberately given to the flute, paying homage to another iconic piece of Debussy's, Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, which opens with a lower register flute solo starting with the same note Db.Conscious decisions were also made to give the phrases in bars 12-13 and 15-16 with larger melodic spreads to the Clarinet, whose expressive qualities across these ranges suit these phrases particularly well.The revisiting of the theme in bar 28, this time in a higher register, was deliberately given to the Oboe and not the flute (not every high register melodies needs to be assigned to the flute). Oboe's higher registers, when played delicately to the point of almost struggling to hang on to the higher notes, suit the sweetness (tre doux) of the solo passage particularly well.Not to forget the characteristic Debussy harmonies that is fully supported and suited to be powered by the French Horn and Bassoon. These lower voices provide the harmonic engine that powers this unmistakable Debussy sound.Truly, this arrangement is a challenge and masterclass in tone colour for the Wind Quintet that demands a simultaneous homogeneity, as well as balance that brings out the Debussy sound, yet allowing each of the characteristics of the Wind instruments to shine through.
