The performance by Gene Kelly dancing through puddles in a rainstorm garnered the song the third spot on the American Film Institute ranking of 100 Years...100 Songs. The song was incorporated by Michael Kamen into his score for the 1988 film Die Hard, where it is most closely associated with the character of Theo. Diana Krall included it on her 2020 album This Dream of You.

This is evidently an earlier song with some similar words in the refrain. The Good Physician was published in the shape note hymnal, The Southern Harmony and Music Companion as early as 1835. Balm in Gilead was published in The Revivalist as early as 1868. Both of these songs were collected by their publishers and the lack of a listed composer shows their apparent age. â™« The Good Physician has 4 verses with no refrain. Balm in Gilead has 4 verses with a refrain. â™« Music and hymn singing was an important catalyst in both the First Great Awakening (1730 to about 1755 in colonial America) and the Second Great Awakening (1790-1840 in the American frontier of the time.) * Written to be sung by two groups, however, there is a cut version (explained in print) that does not require splitting in two groups. It can be sung straight through without overlapping the verses.
* Some harmony parts are indicated in the vocal line. Of course you can sing just the melody in unison all the way through, but there are ample opportunities to break out into fun 2,3 and (in some places) 4-part harmonies. Up to you.

For a whole week of Valentine's Day have your students use this fun and engaging sight reading practice with love songs THEY WILL KNOW! I use it as a warm up/ do now at the start of band and choral classes for the first 5-10 minutes or so.

These are quick 2, 4, and 8 measure examples totaling 10 songs for the students to practice sight reading using solfege.

There are some tricky syncopated rhythms involved as well as key changes (C, G, F, D, Bb).

The songs included in the 10 examples are, in order:

This is a great warm up exercise at the start of class or rehearsal to get the students focused and their brains warmed up for singing, sight singing, reading, and learning new music.

Typically students can take either the whole sheet down in one day and we spend a good majority of a day on it OR spread it out over the week and do 1 or 2 a day.

Structure it as best you see fit.

The students love competing with each other to see who can figure out the solfege and the song first!

Bonus points if they can name the song, artist, and the correct lyrics!

This simple sound file was created for folks who want a traditional piano accompaniment but have no piano in their home. Use it for family singing, dinner party, holiday gathering, etc.

It's only one verse long (everyone knows the words for at least the first verse of the tune) so no lyric sheet is needed. The singing range is easy - no straining for high notes!

Piano plays the last four measures of the song as an intro, then once through the tune, followed by 5 seconds of silence giving you time to stop the playback before beginning the next song.

Ideal for young beginners who can differentiate fingers and know their numbers, this first book in the series, Part A, contains only songs playable with one hand on one set three black keys. Each song is arranged in finger number notation for right and for left hand. The left-hand notes are colored red as well as turned stem down to assist in differentiating right and left-hand notes. When printed double-sided, the left hand page is on the left side and the right hand page is on the right side.Â

I recommend learning these songs in the order given, singing the songs first, then sight reading. Try memorizing each song and try playing them hands together too!

As an added bonus, some helpful worksheets are in the back of the book.
