Published by Brandon Nelson (A0.912905). According to Homer (Odyssey iv:412), the sandy island of Pharos, situated off the coast of the Nile delta, was the home of Proteus, the old god of the sea. In the Odyssey, Menelaus relates to Telemachus that he had been becalmed here on his journey home from the Trojan War. He learned from Proteus’ daughter Eidothea that if he could capture her father, he could force him to reveal which of the gods he had offended and how he could propitiate them and return home. Proteus emerged from the sea to sleep among his colony of seals, but Menelaus was successful in holding him, though Proteus took the forms of a lion, a serpent, a leopard, a pig, even of water or a tree. Proteus then answered truthfully, further informing Menelaus that his brother Agamemnon had been murdered on his return home, that Ajax the Lesser had been shipwrecked and killed, and that Odysseus was stranded on Calypso’s Isle Ogygia. This piece, for solo tenor sax, illustrates that mighty conflict between Menelaus and Proteus. Each movement illustrates a different form the god took in his attempt to evade sharing his knowledge. Composition The rhythmic motives are based on the ancient Greek poetic meters. I translated these patterns of long and short sounds to musical notation (using the sixteenth note as the basic unit). I randomized the order and deployed the resulting phrase as a sort of idee fixe. Each movement uses this rhythmic idea beginning at a different point. The melodic content is based on a pentatonic set and its permutations, primarily its modes. I arrayed these pitches into a grid (not unlike the matrix used in dodecaphonic music) and assigned pitches to the rhythmic motives using differing deployment schemes (rotation, chaining, etc). This is the twenty-fourth volume of an extensive collection of folk songs arranged for the classical guitar mostly in two-part counterpoint. The arrangements are of moderate difficulty and the aims of this publication are to familiarise, entertain and educate guitarists (and other musicians) with a melodic repertoire of lasting aesthetic value, under the light of contrapuntal treatment.The thirty five volumes of this collection can certainly be printed on paper if so desired and there are a few pages in each volume, either blank or with photographs of various musicians, which can be inserted at will in any place for the correct ordering of left and right hand pages so that page turns can be avoided. The principle of avoiding page turns has been maintained in all  volumes, but this edition is also designed with mobile electronic devices in mind such as tablets etc, using the environment and facilities of a score reading application, towards a paperless world, at least in music. Therefore the size of the staves is bigger than usual for ease of reading on a small screen but not big enough to exceed the limit of a two-page view. Commissioned to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Adophe Sax’s birth, each of the movements of this piece (beyond the expository prelude) presents miniature vignettes of music written in Belgium’s past as seen through the lens of Sax’s invention. It is, in that sense, an homage to not only the great musical minds that came before Sax, but also to his own keen inventive mind and incomparable contributions to music history. The Postlude involves a curious intersection of Sax with another brilliant musical mind: Richard Wagner. Sax was the stage director for a performance of Wagner's Tannhauser, and he put some saxophones offstage with French horns because he couldn't find enough horn players in Paris. Wagner was so angry he rescored the Shepherd's Tune from Act 3 of Tristan und Isolde from saxophone to English horn. El Malei Rachamim (God full of compassion) is a Jewish prayer for the departed that is recited at funeral services, on visiting the graves of relatives (especially during the holy month of Elul), and after having been called up to the reading of the Torah on the anniversary of the death of a close relative. The prayer originated in the Jewish communities of Western and Eastern Europe and since the end of the Holocaust, the prayer has been adapted as a memorial prayer for the victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution. The full text (which has been freely adapted in this piece): O God, Who art full of compassion, who dwellest on high, grant perfect rest in Thy Divine Presence to all the souls of our holy and pure brethren whose blood was spilt by the murderers in Auschwitz, Belzec, Bergen Belsen, Dachau, Majdanek, Sobibor, Treblinka and other extermination camps in Europe; who were killed, strangled, burned and buried alive for the sanctification for Thy Name. For whose souls we now pray. May their resting place be in the Garden of Eden, may the Master of Mercy shelter them in the shadow of His wings for eternity; and may he bind their souls in the Bond of Live. HASHEM is their heritage, and may they repose in peace in their resting places. Now let us say: Amen This setting features of mix of traditional and contemporary composition methods to create a highly emotional and deeply meaningful experience for performer and listener.
