Low Voice,Vocal Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.829043

Composed by David Neff. Arranged by David Neff. Folk,Spiritual. 4 pages. David Neff #6035801. Published by David Neff (A0.829043).

No More Auction Block originated in Canada before the US Civil War among African-Americans who had escaped slavery and found safe haven there. It was later adopted by black troops in the Union Army. It is a song of determination and hope, although its positive message is tempered by the wistful line that closes each verse--many thousand gone. Those many thousand were not only the many who had escaped slavery, but also those who had been separated from family and loved ones by being sold on the auction block.

This is a low-voice adaptation of an arrangement written for tenor Larry D. Hylton, who sang with Moses Hogan and with the Metropolitan Opera Chorus, and who has been in over 350 performances of Porgy and Bess. David Neff and Larry Hylton collaborated on recording this remotely during the 2020 pandemic in order to produce music for their church's celebration of Juneteenth, following the widespread protests over the murder of George Floyd.

The song is appropriate for any occasion that celebrates African-American history and music, as well as the ideals of freedom and liberty.

Composed by David Neff, William Billings. Arranged by David Neff. Classical,Folk,Religious,Sacred,Traditional. Score. 2 pages. David Neff #3431629. Published by David Neff (A0.829015).

Babylon is a tune by William Billings which can be sung as a round or canon. Billings (1746-1800) was an influential leader of the singing school movement in early America and is considered the first American choral composer. David Neff's arrangement for organ solo captures the mournful mood of Billing's tune, which was sung to the text of Psalm 137:1 (By the waters of Babylon, we lay down and wept for thee, Zion. We remember thee, Zion.).

SKU: A0.1083503

Composed by David Neff and Enoch Sontonga. Arranged by David Neff. Folk,Multicultural,Patriotic,Sacred,Traditional,World. Score. 4 pages. David Neff #687709. Published by David Neff (A0.1083503).

Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika was written as a prayer for the freedom and prosperity Africa during a time when most of the continent was dominated by European colonial powers. It later became the anthem of several African countries, and during the presidency of Nelson Mandela, it was folded into the South African national anthem. The song had been banned during the apartheid years because of its association with the ANC. It was the South African counterpart to the role played by We Shall Overcome in the Civil Rights struggle in the U.S. These gentle. reflective variations for organ are appropriate at any time of year, but especially during Black History Month. I wrote this piece to honor the African immigrant families in the church I serve as music director.

SKU: A0.829035

Composed by David Neff. Arranged by David Neff. Christian,Contemporary,Easter,Sacred,Spiritual. 4 pages. David Neff #4855313. Published by David Neff (A0.829035).

This moving African-American spiritual is often associated with funerals and other occasions of longing for heaven. It's message is about preparation for heaven (think of fix in the sense of prepare rather than repair'). And it is therefore especially appropriate during Lent and Advent. It has been recorded by artists as diverse as Queen Latifah and Bobby McFerrin. The song has been re-arranged from my previous high voice version, with a range from A4 to E5 (if sung by an alto) or A3 to E4 (if sung by a bass/baritone).

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.829057

Composed by David Neff, Freeman Lewis. Arranged by David Neff. A Cappella,Christian,Contemporary,Sacred,Wedding. Octavo. 3 pages. David Neff #6604597. Published by David Neff (A0.829057).

Freeman Lewis's distinctly American hymn tune for O Thou, in Whose Presence is perfectly matched to an earlier devotional text by Joseph Swain. Swain's poetry stands in a long line of Christian devotion that frames the believer's mystical union with the Christ in the terms of marriage and romantic love. This 4-part choral arrangement can be sung a cappella or with keyboard accompaniment. It is appropriate for any church service, but particularly for use as a Communion anthem. .
