In The Mood - Choral Arrangement for SSA and Piano - Arranged by Michael Thomas Coull

In The Mood is a popular big band-era jazz standard, recorded and made popular by American band leader Glenn Miller in 1939.

Composer Joe Garland (also Glenn Miller’s arranger) based In The Mood on a riff from the composition Tar Paper Stomp by Wingy Manone, and lyrics were added by Andy Razaf.  The first recording under the name 'In The Mood' was released by Edgar Hayes & His Orchestra in 1938.

In 1983, the Glenn Miller recording from 1939 was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.  In 2004, the recording was inducted into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry which consists of recordings that are ‘culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant’.

In 1999, National Public Radio (NPR) included the 1939 Glenn Miller recording in its list of 'The 100 most important American musical works of the 20th century'.

Glenn Miller’s record In The Mood, with I Want To Be Happy on the B-side, became the best-selling swing instrumental record of all time.

This 'Andrew Sisters style' SSA choral arrangement is an exciting and fun jazzy song - a great addition to any choir concert.

By Glenn Miller & His Orchestra. By Joe Garland. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Film/TV,Jazz,Pop,Standards. Score and Parts. 79 pages. John Ivor Holland #898061. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1308816).

Given an injection of infectious energy by Jeff Tyzik, this big band classic (as recorded by Doc Severinsen and The Tonight Show Band and featured on the album 'Prophecy' (1980)) is sure to give your star soloists (alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, trombone and drums) the boost they need to get the audience up on their feet. The original 1939 recording by Glenn Miller is included in the US National Public Radio list of The 100 most important American musical works of the 20th century and has inspired many worldwide cover versions since then. This toe-tapping chart will certainly catch the ears of older listeners and stir up memories, but the familiar arpeggio figures on the saxophone will probably remain just as timeless into the future for younger generations to come.

In the Mood was a huge hit for the Glenn Miller Orchestra in 1940, but the melody for In the Mood had been around in different versions with different bands for at least a decade before. But it was the Glenn Miller version that grabbed the public’s attention, becoming almost the soundtrack to the Second World War. In the Mood has never lost its appeal and has been recognised as culturally significant by the Library of Congress. In 1951 In the Mood became the first piece of music to be played by a computer.

This arrangement of In the Mood is written with accessibility in mind. It is arranged for SATB Saxophone Quartet; that is Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxophones, plus rhythm section of Bass, Drums and Piano/Guitar.
