This arrangement of Chick Corea's Sea Journey was written for an intermediate level vocal jazz ensemble (no extreme ranges, very few splits in soprano and tenor only.) Tenors and basses set up the opening ostinato, with ethereal sopranos and altos taking the melody. An open solo section (vocal or instrumental) includes some very cool background lines. The ending is very powerful, making this a good choice to close your concert or festival set. A master rhythm part (mostly chord symbol;s with slashes) is included.

This post-Civil War spiritual is as relevant today as it was over 150 years ago. The text, like many freedom songs, celebrates both earthly emancipation and the freedom from burdens in the world to come. It has been recorded and performed many times, notably by Odetta, and by Joan Baez at the 1963 March on Washington, where Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his indelible I Have A Dream speech.

Both the text and the melody have evolved over time, and variations abound. This setting reflects my own interpretation of several traditional versions, and combines traditional and more contemporary harmonic choices. It is set for a cappella SATB choir and features 1-3 soloists.

The message of We Are The World is timeless. This arrangement remains true to the spirit of the original, but is more soulful. There are several solos and duets (as in the original) and an uplifting modulation heading into the last chorus.
