Under the Painted Sky

All is calm, the night is falling

down the sun the moon is climbing

slowly in the sky the slarlight's curtain rising.

Blue, the sky of daytime deepens,

Yellow sun burns gold, then red, then slips away

when the moon shines white as snow.

The sky's a colored canvas, all a-glow.

As we end another busy day of time and dreams to fill

Under the painted sky all safe and warm and sleepy and still.

Sunset Song

Silent shimmers catch my eye

Evening sun languid and low in the sky.

A throw of red-coloured light reaching deep, deep, down the hall

blushes shyly on my living room wall.

And I look to the sky.

Painted bluer and bluer

as twilight falls, still deeper descends

until all of the sky is an indigo bird!

And a black diamond, shining, envelopes the world.

For My Mother

Now as the leaves turn brittle and dry
Now as the birds raise their silver wings to the sky,
autumn days grow weary and cold
But there's a warmth and a stillness as your story is told
dear Mother this is for you.
Now when the tears fall silent and long
As great as my wish to accept, to be strong,
autumn days grow weary and cold
But there's a warmth and a stillness as your story unfolds
dear Mother this is for you, for you.

SPIRALS IN THE SKY, BY MARTHA HILL DUNCAN
FOR SOLO PIANO, LATE INTERMEDIATE, 21 PAGES
.....................................
In this whimsical marriage of astronomy and music, my husband,  astrophysicist, Dr. Martin Duncan and I have combined our talents to celebrate the beauty of the night sky and the magic of music. M.H. Duncan

Martha Hill Duncan
’s passion for music started early, inspired by her mother, who sang and played the piano by ear. Martha was a member of the first graduating class of the Houston High School for Performing and Visual Arts and earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from the University of Texas at Austin.
Her piano works have been inspired, at least in part, by her long-time career as a piano teacher and some of these pieces, as well as her art songs, appear in educational publications and syllabi. Piano collection titles include The Sunken Garden, Isla Vista Suite, Precipitations, Angular Measures, Limestone Etchings, Rainy Days and Cottage Days. Since moving from the United States to Canada, many of her compositions have been inspired by Canadian landscapes and texts. In January 2014, her youth opera, Searching the Painted Sky, with poet/librettist Janet Windeler Ryan, was premiered at the National Opera Association Convention in New York City. She was named a finalist for the 2020 Louis Applebaum Award.
A former piano examiner for the Royal Conservatory of Music, she is also a founding member of Red Leaf Pianoworks, a self-publishing composers’ collective. Originally from Houston, Texas, Martha and her husband Martin have lived in Kingston, Ontario since 1988. She also conducts the women’s choir She Sings! and has two grown children and two granddaughters. To explore more of her music, please visit www.marthahillduncan.com

Dr. Martin Duncan was born in London, England and was raised in Montreal, Canada. As a child, his biggest question was, “What would happen if...?” His first experiments involved creating foul-smelling concoctions with his chemistry set in his
parents’ basement. He survived and went on to complete an Honours Physics degree at McGill University, followed by graduate degrees in astronomy at the Universities of Toronto and Texas at Austin. Post-doctoral research was performed at Cornell University, the University of Toronto and the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 1988, he became a professor of astronomy and physics at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
In his academic career he has co-authored over 120 scientific papers, which have been cited over 8,000 times. He has presented numerous invited talks at international scientific conferences and has been the guest speaker at many public lectures. His research has ranged from the study of black holes to simulations of the formation and orbital evolution of planets and comets. He is best known for the prediction of the existence of a disk of small icy bodies beyond Neptune, which he and his colleagues called the Kuiper Belt. In 1996, the International Astronomical Union named Asteroid 6115 “martinduncan” in honor of his contributions to planetary dynamics.

Composed by Duncan Krummel. 20th Century,Contemporary,Graduation. Octavo. 8 pages. Krummel Music Publishing #3629763. Published by Krummel Music Publishing (A0.1012176).

Nightfall is for SSAATB and piano. The text, by Sara Teasdale, explores loss and acceptance. As such, it is an appropriate accompaniment to events such as graduation, retirement, or personal loss. Commissioned by director John Spiezio III of the Paul D. Schreiber High School Choir, the work is written to be performed by an intermediate to advanced intermediate choir, with an emphasis on strong female singers. The piano accompaniment is intermediate to advanced, and better suited to larger hands (though appropriate modifications can always be made by the performer). The music is around 5 minutes long, and offers choirs the opportunity to discuss text painting and symbolism.

Duncan Krummel is a member of ASCAP. Additional music can be found on Sheet Music Plus, and at his website at www.duncankrummel.com, with recordings hosted on SoundCloud, Bandcamp, and YouTube. Program notes can be found at his website.

SKU: A0.1336382

Composed by Peter Burton. Children,Classical,Folk. 8 pages. Peter Burton Music #922181. Published by Peter Burton Music (A0.1336382).

Written during lockdown, this piece is a tribute to the birds of the sea-cliffs. As a family we would often visit these sea colonies on walks in the North West of Scotland. However, the lockdown deprived us of that joy. However, we know at some point we would return. Originally written for TTB solo and keyboard, it is a real family collaborative effort. The words and music are by me ( Peter Burton ) with voices Peter Burton, Duncan Haslam and Patrick Haslam ( my two nephews ). In the video, the paintings were done by my mum ( Morag Burton ! ).
Although original written for three male voices, it could easily be sung by three female voices or three-part choir, particularly children's choir.
