By George Beverly Shea. By Swedish Folk Melody. Arranged by Sandy McIntire. 20th Century,Easter,Praise & Worship,Sacred,Traditional. Score and parts. 11 pages. Sandy McIntire #651581. Published by Sandy McIntire (A0.1047067).

The Swedish folk melody, O Store Gud, became the source for the hymn, How Great Thou Art. That melody is arranged here for an INTERMEDIATE STRING TRIO (Violins I and II and cello). This file contains separate sheet music for each instrument as well as a score. This arrangement is appropriate for prelude, offertory, or postlude in worship and memorial services. Lyrics by George Beverly Shea (not included here) performed by Shea and Cliff Barrows during the Billy Graham crusades made the hymn a favorite in the U.S. and U.K. It was voted the United Kingdom's favorite hymn by BBC's Songs of Praise. How Great Thou Art was ranked second (after Amazing Grace) on a list of the favorite hymns of all time by Christianity Today in 2001.

The Coventry Carol is an English Christmas carol dating from the 16th century. The carol was traditionally performed in Coventry in England as part of a mystery play called The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors. The play depicts the Christmas story from chapter two in the Gospel of Matthew: the carol itself refers to the Massacre of the Innocents, in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem to be killed, and takes the form of a lullaby sung by mothers of the doomed children.

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Sandra Milliken. A Cappella,Christmas,Renaissance,Sacred. Octavo. 17 pages. Sandra Milliken #3691909. Published by Sandra Milliken (A0.774721).

As I Out Rode This Enderes Night is a companion carol to the well-known and very popular Lully, Lullay, also known as the Coventry Carol. Both carols were part of the Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors. The pageant was a mystery play regularly performed in the English city of Coventry from the early 15th Century until around the middle of the 16th Century. The Pageant also included a third carol beginning with the line Down from Heaven, from Heaven so High.

The mystery plays of medieval Europe were traditionally created and performed by craft guilds based in the larger cities. These mystery plays focused on the representation of stories from the Bible, told in the local vernacular rather than in Latin. They told of subjects such as the Creation, the Nativity, the Passion and the Last Judgment.

The Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors depicted the Christmas story, covering events from the Annunciation through to the Massacre of the Innocents. Lully, Lullay refers to the latter event in which Herod ordered all male infants under the age of two, in Bethlehem, to be killed.

As I Out Rode and Down from Heaven referred to the angel’s announcement, to shepherds in the fields near Bethlehem, concerning the birth of the Christ child and the subsequent visit by the shepherds to the manger, where they found the baby with Mary and Joseph.

Today, the two shepherds’ songs are often combined into a single carol with the title As I Out Rode This Enderes Night or The Coventry Shepherds Carol.

This new SATB-with-descant arrangement (the original was scored for treble, tenor and bass) incorporates an additional three verses, the lyrics of which are an adaptation of the dialogue from the pageant that came between the two songs of the shepherds.

There once was a shearer by name Bluey Brink.

A devil for work and a terror for drink.

He could shear a full hundred each day without fear.

And drink without winking four gallons of beer

A traditional Australian Folksong which has several tune variations. I chose to arrange this version of the tune for String Ensemble because of its haunting nature. The arrangement is for Violin 1, Violin 2, Violin 3 (sub for Viola), Viola, Cello and Double Bass. If you use this arrangement, please let me know how it goes! The same tune is also used in my Australian Folksong Medley No. 4 for Orchestra, Concert Band and Brass Band…Can be performed by a String Quartet, Quintet or bigger group as well.
