Mendelssohn, Reger and in particular J.S.Bach are amongst the composers who have based compositions on this melody. It is particularly suitable for use in the season of Advent.

In 1599, Philipp Nicolai published a hymn based on Matthew 25, the parable of the ten virgins:

Wake, awake, for night is flying;
The watchmen on the heights are crying:
Awake, Jerusalem, at last!
Midnight hears the welcome voices
And at the thrilling cry rejoices;
Come forth, ye virgins, night is past.
The Bridegroom comes, awake;
Your lamps with gladness take;
Alleluia! And for His marriage feast prepare
For ye must go and meet Him there.

Christ was speaking of his second coming, but now this hymn is used during Advent, to refer to his first coming.

This famous song is from the cycle Weihnachtslieder (“Christmas Songs�) by the deeply spiritual German composer Peter Cornelius. Composed in 1856 and revised in 1859 and 1870, the cycle is one of the composer’s most popular works. The perspicuity and clarity of its music and verse (Cornelius wrote both) reflect the composer’s engaging and candid temperament. The poetic message of the angular vocal line is cleverly bolstered by the subliminal message of the smoothly flowing accompanying chorale, How Brightly Shines the Morning Star by Philipp Nicolai (1556–1608). Originally scored for piano, the chorale is sung in this arrangement by a four-part mixed chorus.
