My fascination with the culture of the Navajo Native Americans and their healing ceremonies based on harmony and beauty motivated me to listen to ethnographic recordings of their songs, which are customarily accompanied by rattles and drums. A number of these songs inspired me to create two works for different instrumental ensembles for students at the Conservatoire de Versailles. Both pieces represent miniature versions of ceremonial events. Thierry PĂ©cou

Thierry PĂ©cou's interest in ethnomusicology is reflected in this piece. He was inspired by the culture and especially by the traditional healing ceremonies of the Navajo Native Americans which are customarily accompanied by rattles and drums. PĂ©cou composed his miniature version of this ceremonial event for the students of the Conservatoire de Versailles. The piece is also available as a version for flute, oboe, clarinet, saxophone, cello, and piano.

Small Ensemble Flute,Guitar,Oboe,Piano,Ukulele,Violin - Level 1 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1013014

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Na-Mara. Celtic,Folk,World. Score and parts. 1 pages. Na-Mara #5970297. Published by Na-Mara (A0.1013014).

Asturias: this is a popular and well-known traditional folk song from Asturias (Spain). Here we have arranged the tune for two melody instruments. It is one of a number of folk tune arrangements by the UK based folk duo Na-Mara.

Written in 3/4 waltz time in the key of G, Asturias can be played as a duet on two mandolins or on any C clef instruments (violins, ukuleles, flutes etc), with the guitar chords accompanying the individual players.

Performance tips: this is beginner / intermediate level piece played andante or at a moderate speed, with a cantabile or singing style. We have added a second melody part to the original tune, and this makes for a nice interplay between the melody instruments although the second part is quite simple adding tremolo on the mandolin or long notes on the violin or flute make a nice variation. The guitar accompaniment can be played with broken chords, or gentle strumming.

Na-Mara (Rob Garcia and Paul McNamara) perform this instrumental piece on mandolin or octave mandola, with guitar accompaniment. They have also used it alongside other tunes in workshops as a teaching and learning resource, introducing players to tunes from different parts of the Celtic world.

Recordings of this and other tunes on SMP can be found on Na-Mara’s albums ‘Sisters & Brothers’, ‘Navajos & Pirates’ and ‘The Bite’

Na-Mara have built an enviable reputation for fine story-telling and musicianship. They have performed in venues and festivals in the UK, Europe and China, and on BBC Radio 4, and a plethora of internet and local radio stations.

They have consistently delivered new and exciting material to audiences.  This includes their own take on traditional tunes from Brittany, France, Ireland, and the Spanish Celtic regions of Asturias and Galicia.

Rob Garcia:  mandolin, octave mandola, classical guitar & backing vocals

Paul McNamara: guitar & lead vocals

'S Toigh Leam FhĂŹn BuntĂ ta: this is a traditional Strathspey folk tune from Scotland, transcribed and arranged for two melody instruments, and is one of a number of folk tune arrangements by the UK based folk duo Na-Mara.

In the key of D, 'S Toigh Leam FhĂŹn BuntĂ ta can be played as a duet on two mandolins or on any C clef instruments (violins, ukuleles, flutes etc), with the guitar chords accompanying the individual players. We came across this tune from an album by the Scots-Gaelic singer Julie Fowlis, and the song she sings is all about liking butter and potatoes.

Performance tips: this is beginner / intermediate level piece played Allegro or at a moderate fast speed. We have added a second melody part to the original tune, and this makes a nice interplay between the melody instruments. Make sure the rhythm of the characteristic ‘Scotch snap’ is crisp and clean. The guitar accompaniment can be played with broken chords, or arpeggio style. This tune works well included as part of a ‘Ceilidh’ set.
