Composed by Greg Bartholomew. Christian,Contemporary,Jewish,Sacred. Full Performance. Duration 301. Burke & Bagley #2880409. Published by Burke & Bagley (A0.1071144).

This is the first of Greg Bartholomew's three choral settings of text From the Odes of Solomon, as recorded by the Ars Brunensis Chorus.

The Odes of Solomon are believed to have been written around the year 100 A.D., and include strong parallels to the Dead Sea Scrolls. Scholars have debated whether the Odes should be considered Jewish, Christian or Gnostic, and whether they were first written in Greek, Hebrew or Syriac. Early Christian writings refer to and quote from them. A Syriac manuscript containing the text of most of the Odes was discovered in 1909 by the English scholar J. Rendel Harris, and other partial texts in various languages have also been found. There are 42 Odes. Some fragments are still missing from Odes I and III, and no part of Ode II has yet been found. For these choral settings, I selected text from four of the Odes of Solomon which I found particularly compelling.

From the Odes of Solomon was premiered in concert on June 2, 2002, by the Ars Brunensis Chorus under the direction of conductor Roman Valek and choirmaster Dan Kalousek at the Husov Sbor, in Brno, Czech Republic.

The Second Suite from Razumov derives from the second act of Razumov, Greg Bartholomew’s chamber opera based on the novel Under Western Eyes by Joseph Conrad. The opera tells the story of a young Russian, Razumov, who is caught up in the consequences when a fellow university student, Victor Haldin, assassinates a government minister. Themes for Part 1 are taken from the opening scene of Act Two, in which Haldin’s mother, in exile in Geneva and worried by the lack of news from her son, learns that Victor was the assassin and has now been caught and executed. Part 2 is an instrumental interlude. Part 3 is based on the scene in which Razumov is urged to visit Mrs. Haldin, an encounter Razumov dreads because it was he who informed on Haldin to the government. The final Part corresponds to the scene in which Razumov learns that news received from Russia has released him from suspicion for Haldin’s death by placing responsibility on an innocent man.

The Suite was commissioned by a consortium of ensembles led by the Aeolian Winds of Pittsburgh, who presented the world premiere performance on November 9, 2008, at the First Baptist Church of Pittsburgh. On the Ground Where We Live evokes the sense of walking through the community of an old town or city, where new sights and experiences are discovered around each corner. We sense a generally benign social-political environment in which individuals and small groups may interact harmoniously, although at times the world becomes ominous or chaotic. Individual voices are at turns confident, reflective, insistent or celebratory. As the ensemble builds, we may be entering a popular plaza. When the crowd gets too boisterous, we follow a pair of individual voices as they retreat for refuge in a quiet passage, but soon the larger forces return and build to a climatic conclusion.

ERM Media awarded On the Ground Where We Live the Masterworks Prize. The work was recorded by the Czech Philharmonic in October 2005 for Volume 10 of the Masterworks of the New Era CD series.  Duration approximately 12 minutes.

Ukiyo-e (literally pictures of the floating world) is a genre of Japanese woodblock prints and paintings produced between the 17th and the 20th centuries, featuring motifs of landscapes, tales from history, the theatre, and pleasure quarters. It is the main artistic genre of woodblock printing in Japan. Usually the word ukiyo is literally translated as floating world, referring to a conception of an evanescent world, impermanent, fleeting beauty and a realm of entertainments (kabuki, courtesans, geisha) divorced from the responsibilities of the mundane, everyday world; pictures of the floating world, i.e. ukiyo-e, are considered a genre unto themselves. The novelist Asai Ryoi, in his Ukiyo monogatari (Tales of the Floating World, c. 1661), provides some insight into the concept of the floating world: ... Living only for the moment, turning our full attention to the pleasures of the moon, the snow, the cherry blossoms and the maple leaves; singing songs, drinking wine, diverting ourselves in just floating, floating; ... refusing to be disheartened, like a gourd floating along with the river current: this is what we call the floating world... Ukiyo-e: Pictures of the Floating World was composed for clarinetist Thomas Piercy and pianist Claudine Hickman, who gave the world premiere performance in New York on April 8, 2012, as part of the 15 Minutes of Fame program on the Composer's Voice Concert Series. Duration 1 minute.
