Although I'd originally planned to arrange the Hamburg tune for this lovely Isaac Watts hymn, which is the tune I've always known, I found myself drawn to the alternate tune: Rockingham. The stately beauty of this tune is a wonderful setting for Watts' hymn words.

For the Regal Playford series, these duos available as individual downloads for those who prefer to explore one tune at a time. What's more, for this series I offer the tune from the anthology along with another version: The alternate version adds divisions, a common performance practice for Renaissance and English Country Dance music. These duos are delightful for study as well as performance. We are recording all of our duo anthologies in 2015, and that challenging but satisfying journey has inspired us to explore more deeply the practice of adding variations and divisions to Playford's music. The art of divisions makes the performance unique and also extends it. I've decided to make the results available as sheet music as the Regal Playford series.

The text most commonly associated with this tune (When I survey the wondrous cross) is reflective, and inward looking. In it the writer marvels at the depth of God’s love for us, and is humbled by the vastness of our challenge in reciprocating it. We can only stand in awe at the impossibility of our task. Likewise the task of the arranger who tries to capture, in music, a fraction of these feelings. The piece begins very simply and grows more complex, with each statement of the hymn tune more elaborate than the last. Flowing triplets keep the motion going, and the rich harmonic palette is accentuated by several unexpected modulations. The mood is serene, though not always quiet, and often with uncertainty bubbling right under the surface.
