Gabriel Fauré: Nocturne, Op. 104, Molto moderato
Nocturne is a musical composition inspired by or evocative of the night. The Irish composer John Field first used the term in the early 19th century to describe a type of character piece for piano intended to be played in the evening or at night. The term was later adopted by other composers, including Chopin and Fauré, who used it to describe their compositions. In the case of Fauré's Nocturne Op. 104, the title nocturne refers to the fact that it is a piece of music intended to be played at night or evocative of the night. The piece is characterized by its modal, incantatory theme, which seems to hark back to the plainchant that Fauré studied at the Niedermeyer School. Like other nocturnes in the set, it explores one predominant mood.

Fauré's Nocturne Op. 104 and Chopin's nocturnes share some similarities, but they also have some differences. Fauré greatly admired the music of Chopin and was happy to compose in forms and patterns established by the earlier composer. Fauré's early nocturnes employ the same basic textures as Chopin's nocturnes, but Fauré's later works abandon this in favor of increasingly contrapuntal writing. Fauré also adopted ternary form as an essential form for the piece from Chopin. However, Fauré's melodies often show a rigorous motivic construction not found in Chopin. Fauré's nocturnes are, after Chopin's, among the most beautiful and beloved in music literature. In summary, while Fauré's nocturnes were influenced by Chopin's, they also have unique qualities that set them apart.

Composed by Plainchant melody. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Advent,Christian,Sacred. Score and part. 10 pages. Con Spirito Music #6092177. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.726102).

“O Come, O Come Emmanuel†are the opening words of John Mason Neale’s (1818-1866) translation of the Medieval text, “Veni, Emmanuel,†with music arranged by Thomas Helmore (1811-1890), for The Hymnal Noted (London, 1856). The text of this most famous of Advent hymns is taken from various “‘O’ Antiphons,†verses sung or recited before and after the Magnificat during the evening Vespers service in the last week of Advent. Each antiphon is a name of Christ, and together they echo the foretelling of the long-expected Messiah by the prophet Isaiah.

The origin of the music is uncertain. Some claim it to be from a 15th-century French processionale (hymnal, liturgical manual) for Franciscan nuns; others believe it to be of earlier, eighth-century Gregorian plainsong origins.

This arrangement features both traditional and contemporary harmonies and a meditative original introduction prior to the opening presentation of the melody by trombone, which is echoed in countermelodies in later presentations.

Includes both bass clef and Bb treble clef solo parts.

Composed by Traditional plainchant melody. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Medieval,Religious,Sacred. Score and part. 7 pages. Con Spirito Music #702001. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1098129).

“Humbly I Adore Thee†is a eucharistic, or communion, hymn with text by St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274).

The origin of the melody, “Adoro te Devote,†is unclear. In some places it is simply described as a Gregorian chant; in others as a 13th-century Benedictine plainsong; in others as a French church melody published in the Paris Processionale (hymnal or liturgical manual) of 1697. Regardless, it is a lovely, flowing tune well-suited for the legato “singing†capabilities of the trombone, euphonium, or cello.

In this arrangement, the soloist plays the tune through on the first verse in D major, adds a descant over the melody played by keyboard in the second verse and, following a short modulation, recapitulates the tune in the concluding key of G major.

Woodwind Ensemble,Woodwind Quintet - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.960283

Composed by Nicolas deGrigny. Arranged by Stephen Smith. Baroque. 18 pages. Stephen Smith #6429823. Published by Stephen Smith (A0.960283).

The first two movements (Plein Jeu and Fugue) from Nicolas deGrigny's great organ setting of the plainchant Veni Creator Spiritus, arranged for woodwind quintet. (The translation of this music from the medium of organ solo to that of wind quintet is a natural one, since these movements were composed in five-part counterpoint, and given that the combination of flute, oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon is a tonal palette very similar to that of a French baroque organ.) Score and parts have been thoroughly edited, such that any good quintet should be able to produce a stylistically-appropriate performance using the articulation, dynamics, and ornamentation provided, whether or not the players have any prior acquaintance with the genre.
