Folk. Old Time. Ebook and online audio. 185 pages. Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music #31054MEB. Published by Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music (M0.31054MEB).

ISBN 9781513477107. 8.75X11.75 inches.

The island of Cape Breton and its close neighbor, Prince Edward Island in eastern Canada are home to two of the oldest, strongest, and most vibrant fiddling traditions in North America. Cape Breton gave rise to a professional Celtic-based fiddling scene to rival anything coming out of Scotland and Ireland. Prince Edward Island’s traditional fiddlers developed lively, idiosyncratic styles every bit as musically compelling as anything you’ll hear on archival recordings of iconic American old-time fiddlers from the Appalachians. This book features 136 tunes from these two distinct but related fiddling traditions, collected by the author directly from master fiddlers, and arranged note-for-note for clawhammer banjo with as much flavor and nuance as possible. These settings of reels, hornpipes, jigs, marches, strathspeys, airs, and other fiddle tunes are all eminently playable and fully benefit from the author’s half-century of experience playing banjo, arranging for banjo, writing banjo instruction books, and researching fiddle-music traditions.

Here’s what you’ll find in this volume.

  • 136 fiddle tunes arranged for clawhammer banjo in clear tablature
  • Over 40 musical examples and exercises
  • Instruction on basic and advanced techniques
  • Fingering diagrams and detailed fingering suggestions
  • A systematic approach to playing up-the-neck
  • A thorough treatment of playing triplets, grace notes, and other characteristic ornaments in clawhammer
  • Guides on how to approach playing various kinds of fiddle tunes
  • A framework for understanding the modes encountered in fiddle music
  • Historical notes on the tunes and musical traditions
  • Biographical information on source fiddlers
  • 169 audio illustrations available online

Note: Most audio illustrations for the tunes in this book are drawn directly from the author’s CDs, Devil in the Kitchen, Frails and Frolics, Island Boy, and Northern Banjo.

Easter Music - A New Arrangement for SATB Choir with Organ and Optional Brass Quartet

Description:

Celebrate the joy and resurrection of Easter with this exquisite arrangement of Easter Music, a timeless poem penned by Margaret Deland, set to the classic hymn tune ROCKINGHAM. This arrangement, meticulously crafted for SATB choir with organ and optional brass quartet accompaniment, captures the essence of Easter's triumphant spirit.

Historical Background:

Edward Miller (1735-1807): Edward Miller, an English composer and organist, is renowned for his contributions to church music. His most enduring legacy is the melody ROCKINGHAM, originally composed in 1790 for the hymn When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. ROCKINGHAM's enduring popularity and versatility have made it a cherished melody in Christian hymnody for centuries, embodying the solemnity and reverence of sacred music.

Margaret Deland (1857-1945): Margaret Deland, an American novelist, poet, and humanitarian, crafted Easter Music as a poignant reflection on the Easter season's profound significance. Deland's evocative words invite listeners to contemplate the themes of rebirth, redemption, and hope that lie at the heart of Easter's message. Through her literary talents, Deland captured the essence of the Easter story, infusing it with depth and emotion.

Arrangement Details:

This edition of Easter Music transcends traditional choral settings with the addition of powerful instrumental accompaniment for optional brass quartet. The majestic resonance of the brass instruments enhances the arrangement's grandeur, providing a stirring backdrop to the choir's melodic lines. Choirs have the flexibility to perform this arrangement as a standalone anthem or incorporate it seamlessly into congregational worship, making it a versatile addition to Easter services or any sacred occasion.

Ideal Usage:

Whether performed as a standalone anthem during Easter services or integrated into congregational hymnody, Easter Music offers a captivating musical experience that resonates with audiences of all ages. Its timeless melody, profound lyrics, and dynamic instrumental accompaniment combine to create a powerful expression of faith and celebration, making it a perfect selection for Easter Sunday or any worship setting seeking to embrace the hope and joy of the resurrection.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.931667

Composed by Edward Miller & Lowell Mason - music and Isaac Watts - words. Arranged by Wanda Cooley. Easter,Sacred. Score. 15 pages. Wanda J. COOLEY #6272917. Published by Wanda J. COOLEY (A0.931667).

This arrangement begins in a lightly syncopated, contemporary style over a pedal tone.  The second verse is built on sixths, creating an open, hollow background.  Next, a slow chordal style in verse three contemplates the scene at the cross, and the final verse bursts forth in bold sixteenth- note patterns in both hands which actually play quite easily together, contrary to how 'busy' the music appears on the page.  A repetition of demands my soul, my life, my all' brings the value of the cross back down to serious contemplation.  The length is 4 minutes.

WHEN I SURVEY THE WONDROUS CROSS is also available at SMP within IN THE CROSS, a pianist's complete kit for presenting the Gospel thru 10 hymn arrangements sequenced with Overhead PowerPoint Texts.  Also included are program and organizational aids, narratives, and promotional graphics so that the pianist's only responsibility is playing the music!
