Metammorphosis: advice from a caterpillar is a work for solo piano. Commissioned by pianist JAcob Rhodebeck in 2004 for the 'Alice Project' a series of piano works by composers at the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. The work examines the cast of characters Alice meets in her journey through Wonderland. It is approximately 7min 15sec and is an advanced degree of difficulty.

In 2005 I was privileged to study music composition at the College Conservatory of located at The University of Cincinnati. One of the pieces I presented for my master's thesis was this, '3 Pieces for Solo Piano'. The pieces are intended to stand on their own or be performed together as a suite. In 2005 I was very much interested in pursuing film music as a career, as such each piece presented here explores a decidedly different thematic concept or combination thereof, in my attempt to learn more about harnessing dramatic expression. 

'I. Heroic Western' is my attempt to harness the 'Go-West-Young-Man' spirit of Americana Copland with sprinkles of Gershwin. 

'II. Sunken Rag' is an homage to Debussy's 'Sunken Cathedral' if only he had some time to spend with Scott Joplin. 

III. New Tango' is a play on Argentinian rhythms and simple melodic constructs with chromatic rivers running through the texture.

Funk in the box is a 5 movement work for saxophone quartet. The work features Alto and Bari solo movements (with foot stomps), two full quartet movements and 1 one TTB (ATB optional) trio movement. The rhythms are funky throughout and the textures range from typical soli-16th style writing to more minimalist and aleatoric passages. Harmonically, chord progressions are ocassionally implied however the embellishments give the entire a free, almost atonal post-jazz feel. It is suggested that this work be broken down into its individual movements. Thus giving the ensemble the opportunity to practice and perform the individual movements in a modular performance setting, in addition to presenting the entire work. I composed this work in 2005 as my Master's Thesis while attending the College Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. I appreciate your interest in this work. - Michael Mollo.

This tune started in Cincinnati as an experiment with a large jazz ensemble for which i had the pleasure of writing. It was a lot of fun and we got a decent recording of the original arrangement. The tune stayed with me for many years in the back of my mind. When my son showed an interest in mallets, I was reminded of this tune and thought it would translate well to a percussion ensemble. So here I present ‘aji molido’ named after the hot chili flakes for which my son and I share an affinity.
