Like the Op. 1 Sonata for the same instruments, it follows the familiar four movement structure common to the period. Unlike the earlier sonata, this work was conceived specifically for oboe, although one colleague has assured me it will work extremely well for flute, whilst another would like to try it with flauto traverso and harpsichord. Thus it retains the spirit of Bach, who frequently reset his works for other instrumentation. I have provided some dynamics and ornaments - certainly more than I have with my other baroque compostions. Nevertheless, I trust that performers, particularly those familiar with the baroque idiom, will not hesitate to embellish and improvise. By way of interpretive notes, I encourage performers to respect the metronomic suggestions for the second movement, which should probably not be attempted at too rapid a tempo. The third movement concludes molto ritardande, and by the final measure the two left-hand eighth notes should be played nearly twice as slowl as written (i.e. as quarter notes). Finally, the fugato in the last movement (upbeat to m. 83) should be performed in the baroque style, without overemphasis of the thematic entries.

Players may reach their posi ons freely in their own me but it is necessary to reach their places no later than bar 12. The func ons of the layers of material in this piece are o en changing roles slowly, allowing something that was a background texture to develop into something featured in the foreground, and vice versa. The transi ons between these roles are o en ambiguous, therefore keen a en on to dynamic balance is necessary to avoid the overall sound from becoming too clu ered or opaque. Balance voices mostly for transparency but allow material with notated accents, staccato marks or tenutos to stand out against the rest. Regarding rhythm, the exact tempo changes during accelerando or ritardando are not as important as a general feeling of surge and release. It is suggested that the 7/8 signature be conducted as one pulse for each bar, except where it is crucial to play rhythms precisely, for example at places of orchestrated crescendo in 8th notes (e.g. bar 136). This is in the interest of the feeling of me flowing subjec vely, in streams and ripples as in a dream.
