Reflections is the title piece from my lyric collection, Reflections.  It was later republished in a collection of popular Alcon solos titled, Lyric Sketches.  I am now pleased to be able to offer these pieces as individual solos.  Notice this piece has a reflective motive.

Daydream is the first instrumental love song from the Reflections Suite. This delicate piece allows the rare opportunity to showcase the sweet lyrical side of the E flat clarinet as a solo instrument. A version for B flat clarinet is also included.

The delicate shimmer of the piano chords set the wistful mood of a beautiful day: sitting under a tree, staring up at the clouds, freeing your mind to wander. The florid passages and fluid interplay between the piano and clarinet are carefree, youthful, joyous and optimistic.

Four Reflections (Perspectives on America) from American composer P. F. Strohm, is a combined setting of two other works, Dialogue and Trilogy in a single concert piece. This setting is scored for a 10-part brass ensemble, comprised of two brass quintets, one using tuba and one using bass trombone.Combining the two works makes the resulting work an ideal brass section concert showcase. Opening with a hard-hitting, four minute, straight-ahead jazz movement with trumpet solos, the work follows with a lovely chorale-like 3/2 movement that lasts another four minutes. Then comes a powerful three-and-a-half minute incantation, which bursts into a two-and-a-half minute dance in 7/4. The work is solid brass, rewarding for both performers and listeners. Four Reflections is both demanding and exciting, perfect for recital or concert. Level of difficulty is Medium-Advanced, and total performance time is 14:10. Member, ASCAP.

The three poems presented in Reflections were chosen for their varied dramatic and emotional content. Reflections is a work for string quartet that embodies the ambiguity of human memory, and reflections upon those memories. A theme is played, and when it is repeated it isn’t quite how you remembered it. The whole work is also in a rondo form, where the second half of the piece mirrors the first half. The mirror in the middle of the work is also a reflection of the original theme, but shown in a new harmonic context, showing how a memory can be seen in very different lights depending on how it is framed. Overall, the work tries to capture how ambiguous our memories and thoughts can be, and intrigue the listener with the same kind of wonder that so frequently enthralls the composer.

Wandering is the second instrumental love song from the Reflections Suite.  Like a waltz from yesteryear, this piece is a dream-like dance for Clarinet in A or B flat (both parts are included).

Reflections on a German Folk Song is based on the traditional round Himmel und Erde, which directly translated means
Heaven and Earth, however the common English title is Music Alone Shall Live. While teaching music for Saydel
Community School District in Des Moines, Iowa, I taught the round to elementary students and concluded that the folk tune
would lend itself well to young instrumentalists. Consequently, I set out to arrange the round for emerging band.
After an introduction based on motives and rhythms of the round, the tune is initially played by an alto saxophone solo (or
oboe). After a transition from the key of F Major to E-Flat Major, the band divides into three groups to play the three-voice
round. The entire round is repeated twice, exhibiting a lengthy crescendo and eventual diminuendo caused by the three
instrument groupings ending their voices in the round.
Having students perform a simple, yet lyrical round provides for a variety of educational opportunities. Similar to young
vocal ensembles, performing a round helps students to securely play with a group that is doing something different than
other sections of the ensemble, which ultimately assists in the transition to playing within a smaller, individual section or
independent part. Reflections on a German Folksong contains simplistic rhythms, which allows students to primarily focus
on phrasing, articulation, tone quality and dynamics.

Reflections is from the 'Performables' collection, a suite of six pieces for violin, cleverly written for the intermediate player. The pieces are a fun and tuneful introduction to some advanced techniques, including left hand pizz, harmonics, double stopping and slides. Reflections works equally as well unaccompanied as accompanied, making this a great choice for any performance. Approximately grade 5/6
