Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q11149). Der im Herbst 2011 entstandene kleine Variationszyklus über einen Ländler von Schubert entstand zwar aus Anlass des Petrushka-Projekts von Schott. Da mir aber kleine Aufträge grundsätzlich zu groß geraten, beschloss ich, aus der Not eine Tugend zu machen und einfach ein richtiges großes Stück en miniature zu schreiben. Der Witz des Zyklus besteht darin, dass er trotz seiner nur 5minütigen Spieldauer (ohne Widerholungen sind es sogar nur dreieinhalb Minuten) ein ausgewachsener Variationszyklus mit den wichtigsten Merkmalen dieser Form ist. Das tänzerische Element des a-Moll-Themas verschwindet immer mehr bis zu einem dramatischen Trauermarsch in der vierten Variation, um dann in der letzten Variation wieder zu dem Schubert’schen Original zurück zu finden, allerdings in A-Dur und in langsamerem Tempo, so dass sich in seiner bitteren Süße sogar noch ein Überbieten des typischen Schubert-Tons ereignet. Das kleine Opus ist das Schwester-Werk des etwas umfangreicheren Variationszyklus op.64 Variationen über einen Ländler von Schubert für Klavier zu vier Händen, mit dem es in mancherlei inhaltlichem und musikalisch-formalem Zusammenhang steht. - Stefan Heucke.

The full score and set of parts are available separately. Rossini's aria from La Cenerentola Non più mesta has been a popular theme since it was first composed and is one of his most recognized tunes. Many paraphrases and variations were written on it in the 19th century for various instruments including one for violin and orchestra by Paganini. One set of variations for flute and piano is attributed to a young Chopin, who is said to have composed it for his father. For this arrangement, the variations have been expanded with an introduction and coda from the opera. A newly written orchestral accompaniment in the style of Chopin and Rossini was made along with interludes between the variations to allow the soloist to rest. The result is a new 10 minute showpiece for flute and orchestra in the same vein as Chopin's Variations on La ci da rem la mano and Rossini's variations for clarinet and orchestra. The flute part from the variations has not been altered so it is hoped that this new compilation will be a welcome addition to the solo flute repertoire. Quite possibly the longest set of piano variations in the entire classical music literature, with the exception, perhaps, of certain sets of variations for piano by Kaikhosru Shapurgi Sorabji. This work ends with a monstrous 35-page long fugue. In the 18th century, Bach composed the Goldberg Variations (30 variations), in the 19th century Beethoven composed the Diabelli Variations (33 variations), in the 20th century Frederic Rzewski composed The People United Will Never Be Defeated (36 variations), and now, in the 21st century, Gary Noland has composed his monumental 39 Variations on an Original Theme in F Major. (There seems to be a pattern of three variations added on for each century). This is a work for adventurous first-rate pianists! Some of the variations are self-contained and may be played separate from the whole.I'm fascinated by your variations. Perhaps a marathon performance with many pianists doing several variations?
