Bunessan is a traditional Gaelic tune named after the small village of Bun Easain in the south-west of the Isle of Mull. The tune was first published in 1888 when Mary Macdonald wrote a Christmas carol Child in the Manger. In 1931 Eleanor Farjeon penned the lyrics Morning has Broken which in 1971 was popularized by British singer-songwriter Cat Stevens. It currently appears in more than 225 hymnals under such titles as Morning has Broken, God The All Holy, God the Creator, Come to a Blessing.
