Musical material and structure have been derived from the contours and form of the sculptures. Promenade IIa is an open form, improvisatory version of the original Promenade orchestral piece, based on the same musical material. This work uses a series of five separate phrases, allocated to specific instruments. These motifs can be freely stated and repeated in an improvisatory manner as players respond to the changing texture of a performance. The piece is accessible and remains appropriate for higher standards of instrumentalist including students and advanced players.
