This is a stride piano/ragtime version of the old vaudeville hit 'Yes We Have No Bananas' by Frank Silver and Irving Cohn. Most famously recorded by the perky Billy Jones. I have embellished it as much as I am able in a style of Fats Waller with a dashing of Scott Joplin. It's meant to be a humourous piece and is played better with a smile on one's face!
I always strive to keep my music as simple as possible to read and to that end don't include pedal markings, fingering or dynamics as I prefer to leave that to the individual pianist and no 2 piano teachers would ever agree on such things. 
I hope you have as much fun playing it as I did arranging it.

This absolutely gorgeous song was written by Billy Joel in response, I believe, to his young daughter asking him what happens when people die and, as he didn’t believe in the afterlife, he was trying to avoid answering her.

 

I was asked to arrange this as a duet with a cello and a ‘smattering of (SSA) choir.’  As I was listening to recordings of this song, a second voice emerged for me, possibly someone who has passed on, calmly lulling the child to sleep whilst her father is trying to distract her from her questions. This was indeed the interpretation felt by people I played it to who found it very moving.

 

This version has been reformatted for male voices, so duet, cello, smattering of TTBB.

Although Carter gives the pianist two little solo spots, the focus is on the lead alto. The backgrounds are spare and dry, so it is incumbent upon the soloist to supply the warmth and personality to tell this gentle story. Vibrato, scoops, bends, turns, and other devices can be used to bring this simple line to life.
