Body and Soul is a popular song and jazz standard written in 1930 with music by Johnny Green and lyrics by Edward Heyman, Robert Sour and Frank Eyton. After being performed in the United States, the tune grew quickly in popularity, and by the end of 1930 at least 11 American bands had recorded it. Louis Armstrong was the first jazz musician to record Body and Soul, in October 1930. This arrangement features a root-based chord-blocking technique that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. It's not too hard and fun to play - we hope you like it!

“Body and Soul” has forever been linked to the saxophone, since the iconic recording released in 1939 by Coleman Hawkins.  This arrangement, commissioned by the New Jersey Saxophone Quartet, promises to give both performers and listeners a new appreciation of this wonderful song.  The complex harmony and voicings, together with the ballad/double-time/ballad form will be a challenge to any quartet.
