‘A Sable Brush Version of Moravian Folksong No.10’ was composed in 2013.  LeoÅ¡ Janácek composed the Fifteen Moravian Folksongs for solo piano around 1922.  This piece is a 'sable brushstroke' interpretation of the tenth folksong for recorder quartet, with optional drone, which changes the original folksong melody.

Programme note:

In 1906 the Hungarian composers Béla Bartók (1881 – 1945) and Zoltán Kodály (1882  â€“ 1967) published a collection of twenty Hungarian Folksong arrangements for voice and piano ('Magyar népdalok énekhangra és zongorára'). The first ten arrangements are by Bartók. The first song: 'Elindultam szép hazámból' (I left my beautiful fatherland) came to be applied to Bartók himself after his self-imposed exile in the USA. The third and fourth movements are in two parts - the third movement presenting two versions of 'Fehér László', and the fourth movement containing two different songs - 'A gyulai kert alatt' and 'A kertmegi kert alatt'. In later editions, the fifth song - 'Ucca, ucca, ég az ucca' - was omitted, but is retained in these arrangements for instruments in four parts.

I would not recommend these transcriptions for a beginner pianist but are within the reach of intermediate to advanced level pianist. These folksongs have been arranged with performance considerations in mind to create the illusion of a difficult transcription without a need for great technical facility. The choice of key signature, which may be daunting at first, actually allows for greater scope and complexity in LH accompaniment figures. RH passages are written in such a way as to limit position shifts allowing easier execution. Furthermore, great care has been taken to create smooth ‘voice-leading’ in the LH accompaniment figure, especially in the bass line and the chords.
