By Roy Clark. By Charles Aznavour and Herbert Kretzmer. Arranged by Timothy Stapay. Film/TV,Jazz,Multicultural,Singer/Songwriter,Standards,World. Score. 8 pages. Timothy Stapay #811114. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.1213917).

Yesterday When I was Young is a song composed by Georges Garvarentz and written by Charles Aznavour and released in September 1964.  The original French title translates to Just yesterday or Not so long ago.

It is considered one of Aznavour's greatest hits.

The English-language lyrics, written by Herbert Kretzmer, tell of someone reflecting on his life, recalling how he had wasted his younger years.

Lyrics:

[Verse 1]
Yesterday when I was young
The taste of life was sweet as rain upon my tongue
I teased at life as if it were a foolish game
The way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame
The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned
I always built, alas, on weak and shifting sand
I lived by night and shunned the naked light of day
And only now I see how the years ran away

[Verse 2]
Yesterday, when I was young
So many drinking songs were waiting to be sung
So many wayward pleasures lay in store for me
And so much pain my dazzled eyes refused to see
I ran so fast that time and youth at last ran out
I never stopped to think what life was all about
And every conversation I can now recall
Concerned itself with me, me and nothing else at all
[Verse 3]
Yesterday the moon was blue
And every crazy day brought something new to do
I used my magic age as if it were a wand
And never saw the waste and emptiness beyond
The game of love I played with arrogance and pride
And every flame I lit too quickly, quickly died
The friends I made all seemed somehow to drift away
And only I am left on stage to end the play

[Outro]
There are so many songs in me that won't be sung
I feel the bitter taste of tears upon my tongue
The time has come for me to pay for yesterday
When I was young
Young, young...

Composed by Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Arranged by Charles Decker. 19th Century,Chamber,Romantic Period. 22 pages. Charles Decker Music Press #3544639. Published by Charles Decker Music Press (A0.817121).

Tchaikovsky's lyrical mastery of the waltz is aptly demonstrated in this miniature from a set of twenty-four short works written in 1878. Trumpet parts in B-flat and alternate C are included and flugelhorn/trumpet substitute for horn. The sound file is an actual brass quintet performance of the entire arrangement and not a computer playback of the score. When coupled with my SMP brass quintet arrangement of Tchaikovsky's September from the Seasons or my transcription of his Andante from String Quartet No. 2 at Kendor Music it makes an attractive Tchaikovsky set.

Composed by Charles Francois Gounod. Arranged by Woods Only. Holiday,Love,Romantic Period,Sacred,Wedding,World. 12 pages. Woods Only, Arrangements #6474033. Published by Woods Only, Arrangements (A0.956895).

This version of this wonderful song is made for woodwind quintet where it can be freely performed in religious and wedding ceremonies, ideal for young music beginners and even professional music school teachers. It maintains the essence of the original composition, where this time the solo is shared by two instruments that counterpoint the melody that runs through the course of the song.
The piece is composed of a melody by French Romantic composer Charles Gounod specially designed to overlap with Prelude No. Although published in instrumental versions and equipped for various texts during Gounod's lifetime, the claim that he never actually wrote it seems to be literally true. The version of Bach's prelude used by Gounod has the addition of a bar found only in the manuscript of Christian Friedrich Gottlieb Schwencke and the printed edition of Nikolaus Simrock which was based on it, but not in the other Bach manuscripts or the printed work of the scholar Bischoff or G.

By Bruce Dickinson. By David Bowie. Arranged by Charles Beale. Contemporary. Octavo. 13 pages. Charliebmusic #5294095. Published by charliebmusic (A0.865862).

'All the Young Dudes' is a fun period piece and a mid-tempo glam rock classic from the early 1970s, originally sung by Mott the Hoople but made more famous by David Bowie. The lyric is partly about being young and free, and partly about gender. and being a ‘dude’. It tells the story of several 'dudes' and celebrates what they get up to. Like many Bowie lyrics, it is double-edged, and the melody is catchy and fun to sing.

Originally sung by the New York City Gay Men's Chorus, the arrangement sticks closely to the original groove and form, and is designed for an intermediate level group. There is also a solo for a Baritenor with pop sound.
