A Study in Symbols is a piano solo arrangement of the 1901 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, which was originally a ballad for voice and piano. Â I have turned this piece into a Charleston dance, inspired by the original Charleston song which created this genre. Â I have taken the Jacobs-Bond simple 8 bar chromatic theme, altered the rhythm, and embedded it into the chords of my own opening chorus theme. Â Everything else I totally made up to create my Charleston in true 1920's style. Â This includes a new contrasting B theme in the relative minor key for the verse. Â The song is in ABA format with a repeat. Â Full of energy and history, and great fun to play, this piece works for dance, pleasure, or a showstopping concert encore. Â
