An advanced beginner/intermediate -level arrangement of Bastille's hit song Pompeii for 6 players. This is a driving and catchy song arranged for percussion ensemble using 'minimal' gear. I have found that so much of the percussion ensemble repertoire requires multiple 5.0 octave marimbas and crazy amounts of gear so all of my arrangements are for a line-up of one of each tuned instrument and a 4.0 octave marimba - things I have at my schools in NZ (if I am lucky). All of my groups have really enjoyed playing this, especially since they can practice along to the original. Instrumentation: -Glockenspiel -Xylophone -Vibraphone -Marimba 4.0 octave, shared -Drum set (6 players total).

MARIMBA QUARTET - Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major, BWV 1048, is a Baroque instrumental concerto composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. It was composed in 1721 and was part of a collection of six concerti presented by Bach to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt. The original concerto features three solo instruments: violin, flute, and harpsichord with an orchestra ensemble. The work showcases Bach's mastery of counterpoint and demonstrates his ability to write for different combinations of instruments.

This arrangement uses the unique capabilities of four marimbas. Melodic lines are moved around to create a more visual aesthetic as well as unique phrasings.

Version 2 of this Christmas Collage is written for 'cello and three marimbas. The melodies are passed from one part to another. The Marimba parts contains double stops. The 'cello part could be adapted and played by other bass clef instruments, but is written specifically with the 'cello sound charcteristics in mind. A number of years ago, I had the opportunity to join a team that traveled to Uganda, Africa as part of a mission group.  While there, we had the pleasure of seeing a traditional marimba and percussion ensemble perform.  A longtime marimbist and avid percussionist, I spent some time following the concert visiting with some of the performers.  Although their music is passed down through visual and audial instruction (rather than traditional western notation) the group’s leader was kind enough to teach me one of their traditional songs.  Years later, I came across my (copious) notes from that trip and decided at last to write down what I had learned.

What makes Chamtengure such a delight to perform – aside from its energy and joy – is its versatility.  Although notated for two 5-octave marimbas, larger ensembles have the option to double parts in various registers for a fuller sound.  Combined with the encouragement to include shaker and hand drums ad lib throughout the piece (except where noted otherwise) this has the ability to fit nearly any ensemble size.  Fast-paced, repetitive two-measure patterns that build and play off each other makes Chamtengure a guaranteed success with ensembles and audiences alike!
