The viola part includes Slapin Trills up and down the strings in 5ths as well as many octaves, in trills. The cello and bass parts use tenor and treble clefs, as well as bass clef. Welcome to The Singing Viola which is one of the Singing Instrumentalist series of books written for beginners of all instruments.

The book gives a selection of entertaining repertoire and a thorough and complete musical experience from the very beginning.

It is presented in four sections, each designed to introduce a particular aspect of music making, whilst taking on board instrumental skills. We invite teachers to use The Singing Viola as they see fit, mixing and matching sections and songs to give a balanced and enjoyable combination of singing, playing an accompaniment, playing the melody, rhythm work, composition and playing duets.

The book enables pupils, teachers and parents to make a successful start with the chosen instrument.

When the book has been completed, The Singing Violaist will have developed a clear understanding of the function of notation, an ear that can hear tuning and two parts and also be able to enjoy more dissonance as well as pure harmony. The Singing Violaist should be well on the way to becoming a ‘Complete Instrumentalist’, which is, coincidentally, the name of the book that follows this one!

Bach's beautiful Musette arranged for 3 Violas ( Viola Trio, Viola Group ). Parts are all interesting and approachable. Great as for 3 players or groups to perform. This works as stand alone arrangement or can act as accompaniement to Suzuki version.

Originally from Glasgow, Timothy studied at the Royal College of Music, London and the Banff Centre, Canada. He was the Pianist for the Isis Piano Trio and Ballet Creations and is now in demand as an accompanist and chamber musician having performed with artists such as Dame Sarah Connolly and Tasmin Little. He has toured widely internationally and has recorded for BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM as well as TV appearances in Russia and Egypt. Murray’s compositions have been recorded by The Fibbonnaci Sequence and Piers Lane among others with reviews such as ‘Corruscating’ (Independent) and ‘Highly imaginative’ (The Sunday Times).

3 Pairs of Pieces for 3 Violas ( Viola Trio, Viola Group ) consists of 2 short pieces by Mozart, 2 by Brahms and 2 by Reger.
Mozart's beautiful Andantino K355 is paired with his brilliant 'Eine Kleine Gigue' K574. Brahm's famous lullaby waltz Op 39 No14 is followed by a livelier Waltz in G min from the same set. Thirdly, Reger's gentle Improvisation Op18 No1 is followed by a lively Scherzo-like Gigue. All satisfying and fun to play for your own pleasure but good for audiences in a concert too.
