Alto Saxophone,B-Flat Bass Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Contrabassoon,Flute,Piccolo,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1119561

By Richard Byrnes. By Claude Debussy. Arranged by Richard Byrnes. 19th Century. 53 pages. Richard Byrnes #720962. Published by Richard Byrnes (A0.1119561).

This is the 10th Prelude of Volume 1 of Debussy’s Preludes for piano.

This piece depicts the rising of a submerged cathedral. It is derived from a Breton myth. The cathedral, according to legend, rises from the sea off the coast of the Island of Ys on clear mornings. After it’s entrance, the cathedral sinks back into the sea. This is a striking example of what is considered musical impressionism – the allusion to an image.

This arrangement by Richard Byrnes is for 3 Piccolos, Flute, 3 Soprano Saxes, 2 Alto Saxes, 2 Tenor Saxes, Baritone Sax, Bass Sax, & 2 Contrabassoons.

In addition to works by Debussy, we offer works by J.S. Bach, Brahms, Fauré, Glinka, Gottschalk, Granados, Griffes, Lotti, Mozart, Ravel, Richard Strauss, and Turina.

Chopin, Prelude in Db major Raindrop Op. 28, no. 15
arr. for five bassoons and contrabassoon by Gillian Horn

Known as the Raindrop prelude, this is one of the 24 Chopin preludes composed in 1838. Originally for solo piano, this prelude is the longest of the set and is noted for its repeating Aâ™, which appears throughout the piece and sounds like raindrops to many listeners.

After a tranquil opening in Db major, we transition into the C# minor middle section where the music intensifies as we pass from dream to nightmare (this is where we feature the rich low tones of the contrabassoon). The nightmare dispels as suddenly as it arrived, and we return back to peace and harmony once more.

I get much joy from writing arrangements of great works that we wind players don't always get to perform. I hope you enjoy my brand new arrangement for five bassoons and contrabassoon!

Composed by Matthew Nunes. Classical,Contemporary. Individual part. 6 pages. Matthew Nunes Music #104577. Published by Matthew Nunes Music (A0.486136).

As a composer who plays the euphonium I often find that my peers and I are victims of the misconception that bass instruments are not capable of agility, grace, or, in some cases, musicality. Au contraire! While the standard is to teach bass instruments to support the “more able†ones we are more than capable. I was finally given the exigency to write a work disproving these thoughts when contrabassoon enthusiast Kristen Lichtenthal said I should write a work for her instrument. This work has two basic ideas: the first is to display the virtuosity capable of a contrabassoon, the second is to offer a light-hearted touch to an instrument typically brought in for more serious-natured works. Although this work was originally intended for contrabassoon but I have no qualms about it being performed on bassoon. - Matthew Nunes Orlando, April 2014.

Polpis Dreaming (2005) for contrabassoon and piano is dedicated to Henry Skolnick.
The title refers to Polpis, a region of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts that borders Nantucket Harbor with a variety of smaller inlets. This work is one of a variety of pieces connected to the landscape of Nantucket. In the case of this piece, the extra-musical image was one of the incredible depth of the ocean (perhaps parallel to the depth of the contrabassoon's sound) slowly being explored/achieved through the means of inlets.

The work's basic material comes from the contrabassoon's opening gesture, which moves upward from the bottom of the instrument. The pitch material and interval content that are transformed throughout the work are presented in that motion.
The first section of the work is declamatory, with lyric impulses. The material of the work is unfolded as the sounds of the piano's resonance, combined with the tone of the contrabassoon are explored. A faster middle section occurs next in which the harmonic gestures and transformations are always moving towards greater consonance. After the middle section, there
is a return to the mood of the opening, although the material of the middle section also appears in transformation.

Composed by Jason McChristian. Contemporary. Score and parts. 270 pages. Jason Gary McChristian #3108221. Published by Jason Gary McChristian (A0.886144).

Forceful and sinister, this is music that might emanate from a witch’s cauldron or some primordial ooze. The contrabassoon slithers through the scene, mocked by brass fanfares, accompanied by timpani strikes, and interrupted by violent guiro scratches. A faster tempo ensues; the woodwinds and mallet percussion announce scalar flourishes followed by an angular theme presented by the contrabassoon. The section concludes with nimble music in the woodwinds, marked by sprightly accents and dramatic changes of color.

The middle section of the piece begins with a murky background and a plaintive statement from the orchestral bells and vibraphone. Marked Ethereal, this section features a rhythmic motive that develops into a distant ostinato. The simple bell statement matures, growing powerful and triumphant. The music settles, the menacing music from the beginning returns. What was once sinister, now takes on a rhapsodic and mildly optimistic nature. All of the earlier themes are now cast in different guises and pitted against each other.

The cauldron is stirred, the ooze flows, and the contrabassoon, now alone, simmers. As the piece comes to a close the instruments return one by one to join each other in one final, primal scream.

Composed by Johannes Brahms. Arranged by Richard Byrnes. Romantic Period. 63 pages. Richard Byrnes #6870047. Published by Richard Byrnes (A0.830860).

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897) was a German composer who crafted his works using the techniques of musical counterpoint within traditional forms. Within those strictures he created many beautiful and powerful works.

This is an arrangement by Richard Byrnes for Flute, 3 Soprano Saxes, 3 Alto Saxes, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, & Contrabassoon.

Capriccio’s in general are thought not to adhere specific compositional rules, yet here Brahms allows himself to find order within the form. It’s whimsical, quirky, and completely delightful.
