Mit Giacomo Meyerbeers Cantique ist Hermann Max, dem Herausgeber der Reihe „Schätze der Chormusik, ein weiterer Glücksgriff in die Schatzkiste (noch) unbekannter geistlicher Chormusik gelungen. Dem 1859 erschienenen geistlichen Werk Cantique tiré de L’imitation de Jésus-Christ für Bass-Solo, gemischten Chor (3 Frauenstimmen, TTB) und Orgel liegt ein Text aus dem gleichnamigen Andachtsbuch des französischen Barockdichters Pierre Corneille zugrunde. Meyerbeer gliedert seine Komposition in drei musikalisch gleich gestaltete Strophen, die jeweils von zu Herzen gehenden Klagegesängen des Bass-Solisten eingeleitet werden. Danach stimmt der sechsstimmige Chor in die Klage über die Trübsal auf Erden und die Gottessehnsucht ein. Ein wunderbares Stück Musik mit wahlweise französischem oder deutschem Text.

The opening movement of the ballet suite, Castillane from Castile, Rodrigue’s home province, is a mixture of elegance and heroic Spanish dance.
This arrangement is for two advanced intermediate flute players and suitable for encores, competitions and any occasion.
