SKU: A0.1295477

Composed by Isaac Cohen. 21st Century,A Cappella,Classical,Contemporary,Jewish. 15 pages. Isaac Cohen Music #885765. Published by Isaac Cohen Music (A0.1295477).

I wrote Oseh Shalom, wanting to connect my Jewish heritage to my own contemporary classical style of writing. While not very religious, I've always loved Jewish music. To that end, I sought out to write something that wasn't an arrangement of an already existing tune but wasn't also a more obscure prayer that only the more religious people would know, both of which I've done before. In addition, I wanted to write something oriented more toward a concert rather than a religious setting.

Oseh Shalom comes from the last part of the Mourner's Kaddish, a longer prayer recited in memory of the dead. It is not only said in sadness, however. Many settings of the prayer, including Debbie Friedman's and Nurit Hirsh's, which are the settings I grew up singing, are very festive. As such, when Oseh Shalom, I tried to encapsulate mournful and festive feelings and give it a more classical touch.

By Corey M Axler. By Traditional Hebrew. Arranged by Corey M Axler. Jewish,Multicultural,Sacred,Traditional,World. Octavo. 5 pages. Riecore Inc. #871242. Published by Riecore Inc. (A0.1279793).

Sim Shalom is a prayer typically recited at the end of a morning Sabbath service.  This piece takes the ancient traditions of Hebrew melodies and adds a Klezmer flare! Add some percussion and hand claps to the piece for even more excitement and energy! The translation is as follows:

Grant peace, goodness, blessing, grace, loving-kindness, and mercy to us and to all of Israel Your people.
Bless us, our Father, all of us as one with the light of Your face for by the light of Your face You have given us, Hashem our God,
the Torah of life, and love of kindness, and righteousness and blessing and mercy and life and peace.
And may it be good in Your eyes to bless Your people Israel at all times and in every hour with Your peace.

SKU: MQ.1.3587-E

Composed by Jennaya Robison. 8 pages. Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital #1.3587-E. Published by Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital (MQ.1.3587-E).

Hebrew.

Written for the Luther College Collegiate Chorale for concert with the theme, “Prayers for Peace.†Although the work is newly composed, the melodic material seems reminiscent of music that one would hear in a Hebrew morning service, and the melody is one that the singers and listeners will carry with them throughout the entire day. The piece can be performed in a variety of ways: as an unaccompanied work (beginning at measure 8), with piano, or with string quartet. The work is suitable for both concerts and worship services.

Bringing folk melodies into modern repertoire has a long tradition, with many iconic works simultaneously celebrating and preserving melodies which might otherwise have been lost to history. Here we have the opportunity to celebrate and preserve a melody just as it starts to find its way in the musical world.

By the time Debbie Friedman died in January 2011, just shy of her 60th birthday, she had created a large collection of music loved throughout the world’s Jewish community. She embodied the idea that each generation has a responsibility to contribute to the canon of sacred music, and her settings of liturgical texts have been sung regularly for decades. Her setting of Mi Shebeirach, the prayer for healing, is likely her most familiar tune, but Shalom Aleichem is a beautiful capstone to her legacy. It was in an early stage at the time of her death, having shared the melody among a few groups. This melody has since been sung worldwide, beginning with Friedman’s own memorial and the following Sabbath of Song (Shabbat Shira), and it has begun to take its rightful place in the liturgical canon.

The music here is ordered as it would be sung: starting with a presentation of the chorus theme by clarinets in SATB choir voicing, with more of the band joining-in with each repetition of the theme or chorus. The melody and countermelodies move among the different sections until the full band has taken up the tune while the euphonium, horn, and clarinet weave a contrapuntal line through it. Slowly, the joy of the full band is stripped away, exposing the more solemn sound of a brass choir, juxtaposing the joy brought to so many by Ms. Friedman during her life with a quiet reflection at its end.
