The author of the carols, Saint Alfonso Maria de Liguori (1696 - 1787), was a Neapolitan bishop. In December of 1744, Alfonso composed a song that began with the words Tu scendi dalle stelle (You come down from the stars) and consisted of seven strophes of sestine (six verses). The song was published in a collection of spiritual songs the following year under the title of Canzoncina a Gesù Bambino (Little Song to the Child Jesus).
