By Skeeter Davis. By Arthur Kent and Sylvia Dee. Arranged by Timothy Stapay. Broadway,Film/TV,Musical/Show,Pop,Rock,Standards. Score. 6 pages. Timothy Stapay #799031. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.1200229).

An arrangement of The End Of The World,  a song covered by many famous artists. includingThe Carpenters; thanks to the phenomenal singing of Karen Carpenter.  The End of the World was written by composer Arthur Kent and lyricist Sylvia Dee, who often worked as a team.

The Carpenters (officially known as Carpenters were an American vocal and instrumental duo consisting of siblings Karen (1950–1983) and Richard Carpenter (born 1946). They produced a distinctive soft musical style, combining Karen's contralto vocals with Richard's harmonizing, arranging, and composition skills. During their 14-year career, the Carpenters recorded 10 albums along with many singles and several television specials.

Karen possessed a powerful singing voice, and close miking brought out many nuances in her performances.  Richard arranged their music to take advantage of this, though Karen had a three-octave vocal range.  Richard's work with Karen was influenced by the music of Les Paul, whose overdubbing of the voice of wife and musical partner Mary Ford allowed her to be used as both the lead and harmony vocals.[6] By multi-tracking, Richard was able to use Karen and himself for the harmonies to back Karen's lead. The overdubbed background harmonies were distinctive to the Carpenters, but it was the soulful, engaging sound of Karen's lead voice that made them so recognizable.  Record executive Mike Curb said it was Karen's voice that took the Carpenters above straight pop music into pop rock.   She was known as a one take wonder and could deliver a strong performance on the first attempt.

Richard Carpenter was the creative force behind the Carpenters' sound. An accomplished keyboard player, composer and arranger, music critic Daniel Levitin called him one of the most gifted arrangers to emerge in popular music.  The duo's smooth harmonies were not in step with contemporary music, which was dominated by heavy rock.  Instead, the Carpenters strove for a rich and melodic sound, along the same vein as the Beach Boys and the Mamas & the Papas, but with greater fullness and orchestration including frequent use of small string and horn sections and introspective lyrics centred around relationships.  Richard also admired the musicianship and arranging skills of Frank Zappa, and the two briefly met backstage at the Billboard Forum in 1975.

End Of The World: Lyrics:

Why does the sun go on shining?
Why does the sea rush to shore?
Don't they know it's the end of the world?
'Cause you don't love me any more

Why do the birds go on singing?
Why do the stars glow above?
Don't they know it's the end of the world?
It ended when I lost your love

[Bridge]
I wake up in the morning and I wonder
Why everything's the same as it was
I can't understand, no, I can't understand
How life goes on the way it does

Why does my heart go on beating?
Why do these eyes of mine cry?
Don't they know it's the end of the world?
It ended when you said goodbye

Why does my heart go on beating?
Why do these eyes of mine cry?
Don't they know it's the end of the world?
It ended when you

By Karen Carpenter. By Juice Newton and Otha Young. Arranged by Peet du Toit. Contemporary. Score and parts. 16 pages. Peet du Toit #6410509. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802683).

Sweet, Sweet Smile is a C&W song composed by Otha Young and Juice Newton introduced by the Carpenters on their 1977 album Passage. The track features drummer Ron Tutt who regularly backed Elvis Presley.

Sweet, Sweet Smile is one of the few songs recorded by the Carpenters which was chosen by Karen Carpenter rather than Richard Carpenter. Juice Newton and her bandleader Otha Young had written Sweet, Sweet Smile for Newton herself to record but Newton's label Capitol Records was not interested in the song. Newton's manager, who was a friend of the Carpenters, was playing the demo of Sweet, Sweet Smile at his home while Karen Carpenter was visiting. Karen Carpenter liked the song and brought it to the attention of her brother Richard Carpenter who'd recall: I liked it immediately...now there's one that, to me, should have done better than it did referring to the track's January 1978 release as the third single from Passage. Acknowledging the Carpenters' career decline, Richard Carpenter would add: I think if someone else had done ['Sweet, Sweet Smile'] at that time, it would have been a bigger hit.

Here's your brass quintet and percussion version for enjoyment.

Thanks, John. Make Believe It's Your First Time is a song written by Bob Morrison and Johnny Wilson. Originally recorded by Bobby Vinton, the song was twice recorded by Karen Carpenter, both as a solo act and as a member of the Carpenters. Between 1979 and 1980, Karen Carpenter went to New York to record a solo album with Phil Ramone as producer. Make Believe It's Your First Time was one of twenty songs recorded. This version was ultimately shelved until 1996, with the release of her eponymous album, Karen Carpenter. Karen's solo version is far more subdued with only a piano, bass and drums as her accompaniment. The Carpenters recorded a version of Make Believe It's Your First Time for their 1981 album Made in America. The song, like Karen's solo version, went unreleased in her lifetime and was not included on the album. After Karen's death in 1983, the song was placed on the Carpenters' next album, Voice of the Heart, and was released as a single. Richard Carpenter's arrangement uses far more instrumentation, adds a bridge written specifically for this version, key modulation during the last chorus, and the inclusion of background vocals.

By The Carpenters. By Frank Pooler and Richard Carpenter. Arranged by John Langley / Studio Orchestrations. Christmas,Holiday,Pop,Singer/Songwriter,Standards. 95 pages. Www.studio-orchestrations.com #1047742. Published by www.studio-orchestrations.com (A0.1470001).

Merry Christmas, Darling is a Christmas song by the Carpenters (music by Richard Carpenter, lyrics by Frank Pooler), and originally recorded in 1970.  It received a number of remixes, most notably in 1978 in a newly recorded vocal version by Karen Carpenter, which was done at her request. Richard Carpenter himself called the original recording one of his sister's very best.

Hearing this song today with knowing ears and the knowledge of Karen Carepenter's mental health problems it makes a beautiful, sentimental song all the more bitter sweet and precious.  It is a perfect little gem.

In this orchestration - in the original Karen Carpenter key -  there is never any heavy brass apart from 4 horns used very sparingly, and the optional original alto saxophone solo is also cued (as an alternative) for a Trumpet or Flugel horn if a sax is not available.

A guitar in this texture is always desirable but can be traded off as long as there is bass guitar, light kit and percussion to support the soupy lush string lines.

The backing vocals are a significant part of the song's haunting beauty and are also highly desirable however their harmony lines are covered by alternative wind instrument figures so this can be performed with or without backing vocals.

INSTRUMENTATION:

2 Flutes
Oboe
Cor Anglais
2 Clarinets
2 Bassoons
4 Horns
Alto Saxophone solo (Can be played on alt. Flugel/Trumpet part)

2-3 Percussion
Harp
Piano
Electric Guitar [Optional]
Bass Guitar
Drum Kit

Vocal female soloist
SATB Backing Vocals   [Optional, cued to alt. instruments]

Strings

By The Carpenters. By John Bettis and Richard Carpenter. Arranged by Jon Raybould. 20th Century,Pop. Score. 30 pages. Jon Raybould Music #1079344. Published by Jon Raybould Music (A0.1503892).

This is a flexible arrangement of the iconic song of the 1970s by The Carpenters, for 1, 2 or 3 flutes with piano accompaniment or backing track. It works fine with either 1, 2, or 3 flutes. Download the FREE backing track from here
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ar_m2v3n7mvZYO-iFNFmInjGnh8sPWc8?usp=sharing
or play along to the YouTube video from 2:54.

For a live performance, there are 2 piano parts - the chord accompaniment, plus an optional right-hand piano part (primo), to be played by a
second player, as a piano duet. This adds the counter-melodies and extra harmonic interest. Where only one piano player is available, they should play the right-hand melody plus the left-hand piano part for the opening piano solo.

The string part may be played by violins, strings or a keyboard set to a strings sound.

The backing track is not intended to be a sound-alike version of the original - it's a little faster and features a lively drum track throughout. It was arranged originally by Jon Raybould to provide a lively piece for his flute pupils to play in their flute lessons.

The original song was composed by Richard Carpenter and features the incredible voice of his sister Karen Carpenter.
