Abridged version of the famous FINAL from Symphony # 1 by Louis Vierne. He was the organist at Notre Dame Cathedral from 1900 until his death in 1937.  I wrote this arrangement for our Easter Sunday Postlude 2019. Dedicated to the Grand Organ that was not damaged in the April 15, 2019 fire. This arrangement features the opening section, part of the second section and returns to the opening which is similar to the final section. PIPE ORGAN with BRASS added. (Note: My computer program added extra unedited parts so disregard those pages).

This arrangement by Charles Callahan was originally set to the text of the Tantum Ergo, a Benediction hymn by St. Thomas Aquinas. Louis Vierne composed this music, his opus 2, in 1886 at the age of sixteen. He scored it for four mixed voices and organ, and also arranged it with orchestral accompaniment. This edition unites this beautiful romantic music with an even earlier Latin text, but in the English translation made in 1884 by Gerard Moultrie.

Vierne composed two organ masses – Messe basse op. 30 (Summer 1912) and Messe basse pour les défunts op. 62 (Winter 1934/35), both for organ and/or harmonium. These are glorious works filled with melodies, harmony and rhythmic interest historically found in French organ music. The difference between major works and these masses is that each movement within the mass is a few minutes long and serves a purpose during the mass, as certain movements contribute to the drama of the Eucharist.

This piece will be an all around pleaser, is fun to play - with the feel of a French Toccata. 

This edition was created in celebration of Vierne’s 150th birthday.
