This song, published in 1955 during the warmest part of the Cold War, is a true Soviet anthem and also, after it escaped the Iron Curtain, a modern jazz standard. When composer Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi and his poet-lyrcist partner, Mikhail Matusovsky put the song together, they titled it Leningrad Nights (which today would be the very unpoetic St. Petersburg Nights. For some reason the Soviet Ministry of Culture asked them to rename it, roughly, Evenings In The Moscow Suburbs. Thankfully, the official name didn't stick. The song provided break music for a Soviet music and news station and also for Radio Moscow. I heard it performed by a small band on the steps of the Katerina Palace, the Summer Palace, outside St. Petersburg and was inspired to give it a shot when I got home. The full name is Hard-Hearted Hannah (The Vamp Of Savannah). If you've never heard the lyrics, look 'em up. They're a hoot.
The song was written in 1924 and performed by a number of contemporary singers and bands. Its a favorite of barbershop quartets. Sammy Nestico did a terrific arrangement for big band.
It was even sung by an American Idol contestant. She lost. Badly.
This arrangement is adapted from an old stock Dixieland chart for mixed ensemble.

Mexican songwriter Consuelo Velazquez wrote Besame Mucho, words and music, in 1941. When she died in 2005, The New York Times said this of the song in her obituary: 'Bésame Mucho' is not so much an enduring standard as a global phenomenon. Translated into dozens of languages and performed by hundreds of artists, the song has been an emblem of Latin identity, an anthem of lovers separated by World War II and perennial grist for lounge singers everywhere. Virtually every professional recording musician has covered it, from the Beatles to Placido Domingo. This arrangement borrows its 6/4 time signature (and not much more) from the 2001 recording by Maynard Ferguson and Diane Schuur. It's a little more accessible than Ferguson's screaming big band chart.

This is an intermediate to advanced level piano solo arrangement of the beautiful hymn Abide With Me: Fast Falls the Eventide.  It can be very effective if played during church worship services to bring the spirit.  I have personally performed it in sacrament meeting.

Cuban-born (he fled to the U.S. when Castro took over) Ernesto Lecuona wrote the Suite Andalucia in 1933; Malaguena, the best known and most performed part of it, is the sixth movement. It has been covered by everyone from orchestras to big bands to drum-and-bugle corps to (!) Connie Francis.
This arrangement is inspired by and adapted in part from Bill Holman's spectacular 1961 arrangement for the Stan Kenton big band. The song was on Kenton's Adventures In Jazz album, which won a Grammy in 1962.
I've made it considerably less adventuresome -- like taming the trumpet ranges -- so it's more accessible to mere mortals.

This is a little ditty that was played aboard the sailing ships of His (or Her) Majesty's Navy by an onboard fiddler or piper. And to it the sailors would dance, in part for the exercise on a long voyage. Samuel Pepys called it The Jig of the Ship. Presumably, a shipboard piper would play it at a comfortable, even slow, tempo, but it's typically performed at breakneck speed. Or you can start slow and accelerate to stupid. I put this arrangement together for our quintet to play at a U.S. Navy ship reunion. It's moderately brisk, right at the lunatic fringe of our capabilities. It's for two trumpets, horn, baritone TC (a trombone would be near impossible) and tuba, and no one escapes unscathed. Kinda fun, but it's a lot of work for a minute and a half of music.

This is perhaps the best known -- or at least most covered -- of the Beatles' songs. It appeared in their 1965 album Help! It has since been covered more than 2,000 times; it holds the Guinness record for history's most recorded song. It topped charts around the world when it hit the record stores. Here's a snippet from Wikipedia to give you an idea of how revered it is: 'Yesterday' was voted the best song of the 20th century in a 1999 BBC Radio 2 poll of music experts and listeners and was also voted the No. 1 pop song of all time by MTV and Rolling Stone magazine the following year. In 1997, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Broadcast Music Incorporated asserts that it was performed over seven million times in the 20th century. With that in mind, this arrangement reflects a reasonably straight original treatment, with tango, swing and waltz snippets thrown in to show just what kind of damage a gazillion covers can do.

It began life as Maria's song to the Von Trapp children to ease teir fear of lightning when it was first performed in the 1959 debut of The Sound Of Music. But because her favorite things include sleighbells and silver white winters and packages tied up with string, it has become identified mostly as a Christmas song. Jack Jones was the first to put it on a Christmas album in 1964, followed by many others.
