By Reinhold Behringer. By Traditional. Arranged by David Warin Solomons. Contemporary,Traditional. 44 pages. David Warin Solomons #1048222. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.1470559).

An arrangement for piccolo and orchestra of the Barbara Allen folk song with many interesting cadences, harmonies and countermelodies.

In Scarlet Town where I was born,
There was a fair maid dwelling,
Made every youth cry, “Well-a-day”,
Her name was Barbara Allen.

All in the merry month of May,
When green buds they were swelling,
Young Willy Grove on his death bed lay,
For love of Barbara Allen.

He sent his man down unto her then,
To the town where she was dwelling.
“You must come to my master dear,
If your name's Barbara Allen.”

So slowly, slowly she came up,
And slowly she came nigh him,
And all she said when there she came,
“Young man I think you’re dying.”

[“A dying man, no, no,” said he,
“One kiss from thee would cure me.”
“One kiss from me thou never shalt have,
If your poor heart was breaking.”]

He turned his face unto the wall,
And death was drawing nigh him,
“Adieu, adieu, my dear friends all,
And be kind to Barbara Allen.”

As she was walking o’er the fields,
She heard the dead-bell knellin’;
And every stroke did seem to say
“Unworthy Barbara Allen!”

When he was laid dead in his grave,
Her heart was struck with sorrow,
“Oh mother, mother make my bed,
For I shall die tomorrow.”

And on her death bed she lay,
She begged to be buried by him,
And so repented of the day,
That she did e’er deny him.

“Farewell”, she said, “You virgins all,
And shun the fault I fell in.
Hence forth take warning by the fall,
Of cruel Barbara Allen.”.

SKU: A0.1191184

Composed by Scottish Folk Song. Arranged by Mark R Lewis. Celtic,Folk,Historic,Irish,Standards. Score. 7 pages. Mark R Lewis #790703. Published by Mark R Lewis (A0.1191184).

Barbara Allen is a (likely Scottish) Folk song that has spread all across the English-speaking world. The earliest known versions date from the 17th century and as with most folk songs, there is considerable variety in the lyrics recorded in various versions. Generally the song tells the story of Barbara Allen and her rejecting the love a young man who is dying.

This version is arranged for 3 octave handbell choir and is approximately level 2 by AGHER difficulty guidelines. There are no bell changes and the piece is relatively simple overall, but there are a few times where the rhythms are mildly complex with some ringers playing steady quarter-notes and others playing eighth-note followed by dotted quarter-note patters. The melody is passed between all three octaves and harmony is quite simple for most of the piece.

SKU: A0.1088820

Composed by Robert A. Howard. 21st Century,Classical,Folk,Sacred,Traditional. Score. 5 pages. Robert A. Howard #693033. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1088820).

This piece is an original arrangement based on the wistful English folk melody 'Barbara Allen'. It takes the form of a 7-verse carol, with introduction and coda. The piano weaves a set of characterful textural variations on the folk tune, with each verse being linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. The unison, 2-part SA and 4-part SATB versions of this piece by the same composer, are also available via Sheet Music Plus. Duration: 4 minutes.
