Cello,Guitar,Violin - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1329095 By Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Manuel de Falla. By Miles Davis, Gil Evans, Manuel de Falla. Arranged by Nick Mordal. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,Jazz,Latin. 9 pages. Nick Mordal #917069. Published by Nick Mordal (A0.1329095). This is from the Miles Davis album Sketches of Spain and is arranged for violin, cello and guitar. You can also find the song in Manuel de Falla's ballet El Amor Brujo. There is a vamp at the end where the violinist in encouraged to improvise chromatically and cue the final measures. The piece has several origins. I first discovered it on Miles Davis' and Gil Evans' record Sketches of Spain, and mainly based the arrangement on that version. However, the melody is from ancient Spanish folk tradition and was brought to the popular world in Manuel de Falla's Ballet El Amor Brujo. It is a very haunting and moody work in each of it's versions. I believe I captured the feeling in a trio of guitar, violin and cello. Light percussion can work very nicely with it as well, as you can hear in this version performed by Mill City Caravan.

Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1491009 By Louis Armstrong. By Don Raye and Lillian Hardin Armstrong. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Jazz,Standards. 46 pages. John Ivor Holland #1067774. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1491009). Lillian Hardin Armstrong was an American jazz pianist, composer, arranger, singer, and bandleader; she was the second wife of trumpeter Louis Armstrong, with whom she collaborated on many recordings in the 1920s. “Struttin’ with Some Barbecue” was originally composed in 1927 as an instrumental piece, with lyrics added by Don Raye in 1941. This popular song has been recorded more than 600 times, notable covers include those performed Gil Evans, Cannonball Adderley, Paul Desmond, Herbie Hancock, the Marsalis family and Earl Hines. When filing for divorce, Lillian sued Louis for custody of the song; Hardin won, though Armstrong continued to claim ownership for years after. This arrangement for concert band has been drawn from the jazz ensemble version by Rick Stitzel and features short solos for trumpet and alto sax. Arranged as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women into the worldwide concert band repertoire.

Large Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Bass Guitar,Drum Set,Drums,Trombone,Trumpet,Vibraphone,Voice - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.844237 By Miles Davis. By Gil Evans and Miles Davis. Arranged by Gerhard Guter. Jazz. Score and parts. 44 pages. Gerhard Guter #3574147. Published by Gerhard Guter (A0.844237). Jazz vocalists with a band will want to check this out! In 1949, Miles Davis organized the recording of twelve arrangements for the Capitol label, including the composition Boplicity. The composition, popularized with the lyric Bebop Lives by the late, great Mark Murphy,  was originally recorded by: Miles Davis (trumpet), Mike Zwerin (trombone), Bill Barber (tuba), Junior Collins (French horn), Gerry Mulligan (baritone saxophone), Lee Konitz (alto saxophone), John Lewis (piano), Al McKibbon (bass), and Max Roach (drums). This new treatment maintains the cool flavor of the tune/arrangement, but is scored for jazz voice (could be doubled at the octave by an additional singer) with fully notated syllables. Unlike the original arrangement, neither tuba nor horn are required. Instead, the conventional instrumentation consists of flugelhorn (or trumpet - no mutes), alto sax, trombone, vibraphone, guitar, piano, bass, and drums. Exciting twists include a multi-meter bridge section, which weaves in and out of 3/4. Improv section with backgrounds and room for multiple soloists. Changes are in all parts. Horn ranges are very accessible and this is a great opportunity for a singer who wants to perform this classic tune with their band.   Demo performed and recorded by Gerhard Guter.
