This nocturne for solo piano has a distinct feeling of loss. From a structural point of view, there are many surprises, including the elided cadences (where the end of one phrase is simultaneously the beginning of the next) and the way the second theme at measure 15 included the first theme in counterpoint. It begins simply but becomes increasingly complex while retaining its essential lyricism.

This study is the first in a series of 6 I composed in the early 1990s. As the title suggests, it's all about arpeggiated 4ths. Harmonically and melodically, it's in a jazz style, though rhythmically, it's almost nothing but straight 16ths. The tune (in the left hand) reminds me of Thelonious Monk.

This one is nothing like Fred Chopin's. Yes, I did learn that one many years ago. But while my etudes as a whole are loosely modeled after his, this piece, composed in 1992, is as stylistically remote from Chopin as he was from, say, Beethoven. My thirds etude is mellifluous., yearning, and deeply lyrical. It doesn't sound like an etude. It sounds like a distant song that just happens to be based on thirds and just happens to be quite difficult to play. Yes, virtuoso, no show-offy. Have fun.

This nocturne-style piece has a distinctly cinematic feel. I composed it for a student (who played it poorly) and then kept refining it for other students who played it better and better! Finally, I added a secondary voice, which does make it more difficult, but also adds richness to the tune. A good recital piece for the intermediate-level pianist who may want to play something other than the first movement of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata.

Alberti refers to the so-called Alberti bass common in 18th-century keyboard music: think Mozart, Haydn, and early Beethoven. Proving the basic idea still works for modern piano composition, I've adapted it here in a country blues format. Befitting the more contemporary harmonic style, the V7 chord here is a minor 7th, not dominant. The difficulty in this piece starts at measure 10, where a contrapuntal voice jumps in. But it's short—and fun to play. A good showpiece for the advanced intermediate pianist.
